Hi
While l was searching for a leather cleaner, l came upon an old post which stated that all of the late model C4's leather seats have a clear plastic coating to preserve the leather.

ls this true or is it just another story?

And the product best touted is Lexol.

Thanks

Alan

Interesting,Ive never heard this but Ill bet detailing dude would know.I use lexol and love it. :w

Yes, I have read the same thing in several places. Technically, the seats can be treated as though they were vinyl, believe it or not.

Have you had the opportunity to take a look at the seats in a C5 in comparison to a C4? Big difference. The C4 seats are coated and the C5 seats are not.

Many people are not aware of this.

Cheap leather seats!!!!!!!!!

Well today l started cleaning my lt beige plastic coated leather seats and l was really let down by G.M.

The hides that they did use, were probably from Afganistan, because the quality was inferior to my seats in my 68 and 76 vettes.

Now l am starting to understand why my friends told me to buy a porsche instead.

Between the rattles, leaks and cheap materials used, l am almost sorry that l bought the 96.

I should have waited a little and at least bought a C5. Now l'm going to have to wait a couple of years and step into a C6.

I guess l will have to grin and bear it.

Easy,Easy, why so harsh? If you woulda bought a Porche, you would have high maintenance costs .Theres no need to put the c4 down. All cars have there down falls .I think you made the right choice. :w

I understand your frustration, and I feel the same way about the quality of the "leather seating surfaces". The interior materials used in the C4 have long been the achilles tendon of the car. Many consumer magazines have commented on the poor quality of the leather, carpet, plastics, etc. I agree with the poor quality of the carpet as well.

What I do like about the car tends to override these shortcomings though, and that is the drivetrain. Much more of GM's money was poured into the drivetrain than into the interior, I think that is obvious.

Am I disappointed with the quality of the leather and carpet? Yes. Does the car still stir my soul everytime I turn the ignition? YES!!! :D Keep the Vette and don't regret it.

Frustrated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Being that l live in an area that 98% of corvette owners only use dealerships and 2% do it themselves l'm a wandering soul without a guide.
I joined the biggest corvette club in my area and it seems to me that if they do not do the work themselves, then they do not want to share their secret mechanic's.

I cannot ask anyone to help me yet because l'm new to the club and it's not fair of me to ask them and what happens if they blow it in error.

Thanks for listening, l almost feel like a crybaby.

Alan

I'm a little confused in regard to your reasoning. You state that you joined a large Corvette Club. Good, great idea.

You also state that it's "not fair" for you to ask anyone within the Club for help. ?????? Man, I'm missing something big time here. Your fellow Club members share the same interest that you do...the Corvette. Why would you feel that it's not fair to ask questions and try to receive some guidance from fellow Corvette enthusiasts? The members should be there to help one another, not hinder.

I have found my Corvette Club to be a great source of information and have readily struck up conversations with members in order to gain knowledege.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. :(

Club Members!

I have only attended 3 meetings and what l have gathered most of them have C2's, C3's and C5's. The only C4 l saw was a rat.

One of the member's at my first meeting gave me a name of an A-10 mechanic (the highest rated GM mechanic) that moonlights, but you have to wait at least 5 weeks because he rents out a lift on weekends.

Also, he doesn't have an inventory to pull from.

Now what happens if he blows something, l really do not want to wait another 3-4wks for him to look at it.

There should be more C4's but the owner's have not attended a meeting since l joined or there out there and l do not know it.
When my club has a corvette function, l should be able find someone. One more thing most of them have garage queens.

Alan

I can understand where hes coming from.It sounds like the others in his club are the type to buy either new corvettes or restored corvettes.I like those kinda people ,they are my best customers. He just doesnt relate to them well because if he were to ask how to fix something,he would get the generic answer,"I let my mechanic handle that".:w
