Letter & Number on Hood

Hi All,
Just a quick question about something I noticed on my 76. I have the L-48 designation on either side of the hood. I know they did this for L-82's but recently I have noticed that in other pictures of 76's the L-48 is not present. Is this something that was added by a previous owner?
