I have a '98 vert , the steering column locked up . the DIC reads steering column lock-needs service, the car had to be towed to the dealer, there is a service bulletin on this very thing , but dealer says car is out of warranty and tough luck. I thought they were required to fix known defects. Any ideas , I could use 'em.
thanx

It depends on what your VIN is. There are service bulletins and a recall notice out about this issue. Please see:

Great news! I went to the links , my vin is not in the recall , but is covered by the service bulletin , I called the chevrolet customer satisfaction center , they then called the dealer , said they would look into it and assess what I might have to pay , I went by the dealer later and was informed that all of these steering columns will be recalled soon , and the dealer would go ahead and cover the repair .Thanx again , this is a cool board , it probably just saved me a bunch.

I would like to get the phone # for the Chevrolet satisfaction center to make sure I get a mailing from GM when they are set to implement the recall. I bought my car used and I doubt Chevrolet knows I have this 1998 car

Thanks

The # for the chevrolet satisfaction center is 1-800-222-1020 , make sure you check out the current recall to see if your vin is already there.

Were you driving when the column locked?

The car was parked , but left my spousette stranded , until AAA got there, by the way AAA was great ,when she called , the first thing they asked was she in a safe place and was it well lit , they arrived quickly , loaded the vette carefully and delivered it to the dealer and unloaded it so it spent the night under a camera. Also the dealer did in fact fix it for free , even though we are not the original owners.

Just received my recall letter today!!!. Taking in Monday.

Good Luck!!!

c5 Steering Column Lock- good news

I was victim to the column lock back in August 03 in my 2000 Man Trans Vette.I was forced to pay over 500 clams to the local dealer who basically was clueless and my car was only 2 mos out of warranty.I called GM exec offices in Detroit and filed a complaint and got a case number with a rep but was turned down again after referral to the local Regional rep in Colorado. Until this April when I read of the coming recall here on CAC, I decided to pursue again my request for refund.. It worked!!! I called the mentioned GM contact and left a email also mentioning my previous case # and I got a call back in 2 days from GM Exec offices in Detroit saying they would reimburse me!!My dealer smugly told me my car was not a part of any recall but I KNEW better thanks to the Action Forum.I am awaiting my check..Hope this helps!!! :cool
