Ok, heres the situation...

My parents are moving, and are considering "giving" me the Corvette. We've owned the car since 1991 (1991 FX3 Steel Blue Metallic, A4) and its the car that pretty much started my craze into Corvettes, and high performance.

As much as i really do consider it a blessing that my dads going to "give" me his car, ive got an opportunity go obtain a 98 SS ( 6 speed, cloth interior, hard top) aswell.

I know "hey, its still a vette, even if it is an L98" and NO im not trying to sound like a self-centered jackass about it and telling my dad "hey, your car is great, but how about this....", im just looking for different opinions here. He has considered selling the car before, but i've always stopped him. Now, the vette has a bunch of sentimal value to me, but the SS has a much more responsive motor, imo. What do you think? My plans for either would be heads, cam, exhaust, long tubes, gears and some apperance stuff. Trade in value on the vette is about even w/ what this SS is going for as far as wholesale, im just curious as to think some of your opinions on this...

Keep the vette, and mod it, or sell it for the SS?

As a Vette and F body owner both, I will say that there is no comparo between the two. true the vette is "just an L98" :eyerole but it will always be a Vette. L98's are TORQUE monsters!!! :D If you don't think the power level is right, cam and heads will sure wake the car up as will a Supercharger, etc.
Steel blue is a rare and seemingly desireable color these days...
Good luck w/ your decision :beer

Keep the Vette!!!!!!...So what if the power is not as great as the SS...At least you will look better in the Vette :t ...With all honesty, I think you would be so much more happy with a Vette ...Thats my 2 cents worth...Peace out.

Vette.........Forget the F Body.......they are a dime a dozen running around... I bet they are saying, boy I wish I had a Vette.......Keep the Vette...... :bash

You are just messing with us, Right??? An F body instead of a Vette?? ARE YOU INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!:duh :duh :duh :duh

I ageee with most... an F-body for a vette... no way. The vette will always have a better value and that will increase as the years go by.

Plus, this vette is a vehicle you know... why trade it for the unkown. You know the vette's maintenance, history, and certainly the last owner... time to get off of here and get out there driving the nice gift you have...

Be proud... your a "vette" owner ... everyone recongizes that that word... now tell them you are an "F-body" (whichever model) owner... and your sure to hear many say..."who makes that"... "what is that"... "I don't think there is an American alive that does not know what the word "Corvette" represents.

Good Luck!

Hi Ling-650 Vette,
The Vette...The Vette...The Vette...
If you need any meor help, don't be afraid to ask.

I would have to say.....KEEP THE VETTE!!! Especially if your Dad is giving it to you. I love that Steel Blue color too. There are so many modifications for the L98 motor that you could easily have a very high horsepower Corvette without having to spend the extra money on an LS1 car. Plus...nothing is as fun as hanging out with other Corvette guys:D

The Vette will be much better in the long run... that plus the family history == Corvette.

What does "give" mean? is he going to give you the car, or just give you a really good deal on it?

I might add "or gals!" (Just in case Heidi is looking!)

Go for the Vette! Nothing like raising the clamshell hood and being able to see just about everything in the engine compartment. The L98 is a good looking engine too, not to mention the torque they put out down low.

The Steel Blue is a great color that you do not come across often, and to know its history is icing on he cake.

What ever your decision, good luck and enjoy your new ride!

Perzactly!

and...ifn I was your dad and got wind of this 'choice' you seem to be bothered with......you'd quickly have lost the chance on the Vette.....
What an ingrate!

Never look a gift horse...:nono Besides, think of taking the old boy out for a spin years down the road and proving how well you took care of it. Maybe pass it on to your son like the octogon barreeled 30-30 that has been in my family for 3 generations...

Your 91 CORVETTE will hold its value better in the future than any 98 SS.

Plus you will be a part of history.
The F-bodies died for a reason.
The MUSTANG would out sell both the CAMARO & the FIREBIRD 3 to 1.
But the VETTE???

Its a no-brainer.

I have to cast my vote for the vette as well. Of course, here you are asking this question on the Corvette forum. I don't know that you could consider the answers you get to be unbiased.

I think the F body cars are spiffy, too. But they've always been GM's 'cheap sportscar'. The red headed little brother's of the vette flagship. GM made sure they were not as nice as the vettes since they didn't want them to compete with their flagship.

In terms of performance, I would definately go with the vette. It may not be as fast in a straight line right now. But it's more of a dedicated race car, and it will handle better than the F body.

Engine power is fixable. You can make the vette have as much horsepower as you like. The mods are readily available and well known. You can have over 1000hp (V8 with twin turbos) if you want to put enough money into it.

But you can't make the F body handle as well as the vette can handle. The F body is more sedan like, and the vette is more race car like.

The vette is the better base platform. It can reach farther than the F body can when you start upgrading your car.

Plus... as has already been mentioned... going with the car that has the known maintainence history versus the unknown... that's a serious tradeoff there. If you do buy that SS, put aside another thousand or two to fix the hidden problems the previous owner isn't telling you about that you'll find within the first three months. There will _always_ be some stuff to fix up on an unknown new used car like that. Factor that extra cost into the cost of the SS when you're doing your comparisons.

On the other hand, you already know what problems the vette has. So factor in the cost of fixing those, too. And if it doesn't have any problems that need fixing, that's just golden. Because that is not going to be the case for the SS or any other car you buy on the open market. So keep that in mind.

I appreciate all the replys, and yeah i did kinda figure it to be a biased decision ;).

ONLY reason i was thinking about doing it, is b/c the LS1 would pull better times w/ less $$ sunk into it. Yeah, a head/cam package would wake up the L98, but the LS1 would pull some badass times w/ just those little mods.

But anyway, since im probably going to be going to Clemson this fall, and my parents are moving to Kentucky, its just easier to keep the vette. I dont think im going to rip it open too much, maybe some apperance stuff, and a catback and induction setup, but i dont think im going to go full tilt (well, right yet anyway ;) ) on modding her out...

And by "give" i mean just that give. My dad felt that he wouldnt need the vette in Kentucky, especially going to the airport all the time (he's a Delta 757/767 pilot) and that it would be in better care w/ me than w/ him. And like i said, i wasnt trying to step on anyone's toes, or sound like a stuck up/snotty lil prick, but i just wanted some differing opinions.

But, i think i enjoy being in the vette family a little too much right now...its a rare car, and ive gotten asked for it to be in the car show the AFB base has comming up, and @ the car show we've got @ the dealer here pretty soon.

Thanks for all the replys, and again, i wasnt trying to sound like a self centered *******, or anything like that, just wanted some others opinions on the matter.

Good choice going for the Vette'. I tell ya, it's a weird and good feeling to stand in a parking lot talking to a totaly stranger about Corvette's. I've never seen F-body guys doing that unless they know each other.

There's just something "mystical" and sacred about the Corvette. Can't explain it though:beer
