The engine would be fine if I were to delete it would it? The reason I would want to delete the cooler is that the previous owner had the same problem. I also understand that is not the best design.

Thanks Mac

Well if it's the filter adapter, and not the cooler, then I'd keep the cooler.

The core issue your facing is this: The C4 cooling system is marginal at best. Removing the oil cooler isn't a great idea IMHO for that reason. Repairing it, not removing it, is your most correct action.

Good luck!

In case anybody wanted to know I found the OIL FILTER ADAPTER GASKET KIT the part # 88893990

Mako, it's a trade-off... in order to cool the oil, you raise the temp of your coolant. If you're not planning to drive the car hard all the time, there's no need to cool the oil - esp. if you're using synthetic, which won't break down until 400+ degrees.

My Vette came without the cooler and I added it later. I don't actually notice a big difference in oil temps over beforehand, though I didn't drive it a lot before I added it.

Disregard that part#. I just got off the phone with Jeff Kopp at Superior Chevrolet Performance and there is no Oil filter adapter gasket for the 85. The adapter just bolts to the block and the only gasket needed is the O-ring on top of the oil cooler:beer

You are correct in saying the heat from the oil gets dumped into the radiator.

I disagree that the primary use of the oil cooler is to avoid break down though - cooler oil will handle shear loads better even if it's not thermally breaking down.

That said, don't ask me if I have oil coolers on my hotrods... ;-)

I went for a long time thinking of this gadget as an "oil cooler." Once I saw how it works, I don't think of it as an oil cooler, I think of it as an oil warmer. By this I mean that in cold weather, it warms the oil quicker, providing proper oil flow during warm up. It does indeed keep the oil temperature down, but that is really not a problem considering that without it, the oil temperature typically does not get into the critical area.

This critical area for dino oil is around 280 F, and for Synthetic goes up over 400 F.

Have a great day,

I just wanted to let you all know I found my problem. The oil filter adapter that bolts to the block was crcked half into. I guess that is where my loss of oil was coming from. I put the filter on, no cooler, cranked it and it did not leak a bit. I am almost scared to put the cooler back on but guess I will to keep from having to reroute the coolant lines.

Thanks Mac

Cool, I was pretty sure that was the cause, it's a fairly common problem.

Please do reinstall the cooler. It's a Good Thing to have.

I just wanted to let you all know that I took the cooler off and connected the 2 coolant lines together. I have been driving it around and it does not leak a bit of oil. The temp. of the oil and coolant is the same as before I took the cooler off. I have driven it up to about 25 miles so it was fully warmed up. The car had leaked since I have owned it but not anymore. It is so nice to pull in the garage and not have the carpet under the car anymore. Thanks for the help everyone.
