04 Metallic Red Convertable 6-Speed
I have an 04 Convertable with a 6-speed. Purchased new in late March of 04.

Two weeks ago I decided that since it only had 1,600 miles on it (no typo, thats sixteen hundred), that it was time to enjoy it. Left the Chicago area and just south of Sedona Az, (about 3,500 total miles on the car) I got a "Low Oil Level" warning on the information system. Added oil immediately, and since then have gotten an [FONT=&quot]intermittent warning from time to time. Currently in Ca. with plans to drive back through Vegas and Denver. Check the stick every time I get the warning but it's getting old. Any suggestions on how to cure this?

Thanks for any assistance anyone can offer.

04Rocket,
Welcome to the CAC.
How much oil did you add the first time you got the message? I usually find that when the light comes on, it is about 1 quart low.
I've never had the light come back on when it didn't need oil though.

Low Oil Warning

Exactly one quart.. Sometime when I hit the reset button it will not appear for six hours, other times within minutes.

Thanks for the response.

Take it in to Chevrolet and have it repaired it should still be under Warranty!!:upthumbs

I agree it shouldn't take more than just a couple hours to have the dealer inspect it so they could tell you whats up.

I've never had to press the reset button to get the message to go away.
I've always just shut down, added oil, cranked up again, and the message was gone.
Agree, sounds like a warranty item to me too.

Is it safe to assume that you were low on oil when you added it each time?
If not it could be a defective sensor.

Low Oil Warning

Yes. It was i qt low the first time the light came on. Since then the level has been correct, just the warning coming back on from time to time.

I guess dealer is the answer. Thanks to everyone for your info.

Just an off the wall thought...does it just do it after running for awhile? Something to consider is could it possibly not be draining back down properly causing it to come on? It sounds a lot like a sensor, but on the chance the oil may be gummed up some and not draining very well, I'd hate to drive it assuming a sensor to find out later that it wasn't oiling like it'd needed to be.

I'd bet it's the oil sensor. If it shows full and good oil pressure you should be all set for a while but i'd get it in as soon as practical.

Just an idea...

Is the original oil still in your engine?

If so, since the oil has been in your little-used engine for over two years, I wonder if it has accumulated some sort of thickening "clumps of something"... and / or that it is not draining from the top back down into the crankcase. Even though it is synthetic oil, it may be possible that gunk collected during the long sitting-unused period.

I would definitely drain all the oil out and change the filter. That will flush and clean the engine somewhat.

Unless I am misreading, it sounds like you have a consumption issue rather than a sensor issue. If every time the light comes on you add oil, it seems that the sensor is doing its work. I'd make some notes on the amount of oil used per distance traveled and take that to the dealer. For reference, I have never had to add oil but there will be some tolerance that the dealer/GM will call normal consumption.

Bad sensor.

Just returned from the dealer and they replaced the sensor.

They also adjusted the trunk lid because it would stick when opened.

Thank you again for all of your posts and advice.

Glad we made a good guess.......:upthumbs :w

Are you still in Calif? If so and you get to Sacramento area, I'll buy you lunch........
