Was looking at intsalling a Moroso coil until I got out the Haynes. Does the water pump and drivebelt pulley have to come off to replace the coil. What a stupid place for a distributor !!!

Not for the coil but it does for the opti.

The Vette comes with a pretty potent coil(40k volts). An aftermarket coil won't really do much for the car except maybe for looks.. The coil sits on top of the motor and isn't hard to swap out. I think it took me 15-20 minutes to replace the coil on my 93, it was last summer so I can't be sure on the time.

If you are talking about the distibutor.... THAT is a totally different animal. Front of the motor below the water pump(has to be removed to pull distributor). It is driven off the front of the camshaft.

Thanks guys, the Haynes manual shows the coil on top of the dist. Where is it ???

It is on the front of the passenger side head. You need to unbolt the power steering reservoir(sp) and pull it away. Unplug the connectors to the coil. Then remove a couple of bolts to remove the ignition assembly(coil, spark module, and heatsink), then remove the coil and replace. Reverse proceedure to reassemble.

Have Fun!

FredK,

Is it possible your manual is showing an older engine (not a LT1) with a conventional HEI (high energy ignition) distributor that mounts the coil on the top of the distributor?

Make sure the engine is cold and wear the michale jackson glove.

The heat sink for the module is sharp and hot ,don't forget the dilectric grease.
Install all the coil bolts out of the engine compartment .

YES YES YES!

Mechanics gloves are a must. :W Ouch, ouch, ouch!

The heatsink compound is definately needed. Helps with heat transfer. Although. I don't believe he has to remove the module in this process.

Thanks for the info and C4Tom what technique are you using to launch you 93 at the drags. The track here should be opening soon so maybe you could save me some rubber.

I got my 13.98 when I held the break with my left foot and idled up to just over 1000 rpm. Manual shifted when the tach got to 5300 rpm because it won't actually change gear when you shift. It started spinning when I left so I came off the throttle for a split second and right back on it. That was on the run-flats and they do not stick. If you have good rubber on yours, you should be good to go. One run I stayed on it and it spun out past 50 feet.

The track I go to, opened last Saturday. :D I don't plan on going until after the Cruisefest because I'm afraid I'll break something and not be able to make it to the show in the Vette.

Mic is right though...if it ain't broke...don't fix it! :upthumbs
