My 96 LT4 starter is acting up. I think the solenoid is going bad. I looked at it and it does not have the two screws that attach it to the motor like my old 327 so I called around to some of starter rebuild companies in Ft Worth and I was told they have a solenoid that you have to drill and tap threads to because the orginal one is crimped on. In the old days we would reverse the contact washer and the starter would work like new again. Has anyone tried this fix? $25.00 for a solenoid is geat, so I called some of the Chevy Dealers (wanted a GM part)and they do not sell the solenoid just a whole new starter, ouch it's Christmas.

I know what your talking about on the old starters and have done it many times. Sometimes the contact are also burned and will give trouble in the near future. For $25 I would go with the new solenoid. While your at it do they have new brushes for the starter? If so and it isn't to difficult put those in while you have the starter off.

Thanks Glenn I forgot about the brushes as it has been 20 years since I did the washer trick.
