I often light-heartedly joke to myself that I must be getting old (Luis, my dual-personality alto-ego just laughs...:bash ), for I can't seem to remember where I left things or how things were when original.

Tonight, I was using some mineral spirit to scrub-off the chemical paint remover I used on the L81 intake. While rubbing, I noticed silver paint underneath the GM Blue that had been painted on it, so the following question formed in my mind...:duh ..what is the original paint configuration on an L81? Is it all GM Blue? Was the intake silver? ;shrug .

Like I said above, I must be getting old. So if someone can guide me a clue or perhaps someone has pictures of their original L81 engine set-up, then I Uncle Gerry wants you! :pat ...no really, I would very much appreciate it.

Don't take my word for it, but I believe they were originally bare aluminum, not painted blue.

gerry, mines been painted as well,so it looks like,so I'm not sure,If I ever take it off,it will be the original color :)

bill.......:w

I've seen some L81's that where all GM blue including the intake. But also some that had a silver painted intake. What i think is that they updated / changed more with the St. Louis to the Bowling Green plant then just the paint colors. Maybe we could setup a table or something to put down these differences? On this forum there are a few 81 first owners so they have best original 81s.

Greetings Peter.

:dance

Aluminum intake (started in 1980) and new for 1981 Stainless Steel exhuast manifold. the INTAKE should not be painted, or at least be silver ;)

Bud,

As always, thanks for the help! I browsed over the assembly manual (mid America version), and I could not sort-out the painting details for the engine. I think that the painting details there are all for the body, but it's good to know that it should be silver.

Billy, Tatortot thanks you as well.

Gerry,

I'm in the process of having the floor professionally done in my garage :D I'll TRY to remember (I am just a tad bit older than you ;LOL ) to get a photo of Rare's engine today sometime and post it later ;)

Thanks, bud! Again (no surprise here) you come through for me. I can even see the overspray of blue on some of the areas. That's how I found mine. It still has the overspray blotches of GM blue. Thanks a million!

I was looking at the same thing! Now i'm going to reassemble the enginebay i also want all the original stickers in place but i've never seen this one...
First i thought it was the vehicle emission control info sticker but i should be white and not yellow.

Greetings Peter.

I think that's just a reflection.

I haven't seen any stickers on the air cleaner cover, except in this photo. It may be a reflection or it maybe a dealer check sticker. I remember finding this photo on a Corvette For Sale site a few years ago. There were about 20 photo's of the car, as I recall, and each one looked like it was professionally taken.

I liked it since it was 84L paint but mine has Silver interior and this one has Black. We have a few "Original Owners" at the Registry, hopefully one of them can clarify this a bit more ;) (Unless Bill knows what NCRS says about it)

Ditto. The sticker on the base of the air cleaner looks much clearer, I'd say it's a reflection of the guy's shirt who took the picture. Just my opinion.

That is a reflection. The chrome lid should be pristine. There are stickers on the black air cleaner base and Bud's picture does show it.

Hey Bud..... jeez.... I'd forgotten how crappy all that emissions stuff looks in that engine bay.

you going to make it to Cruisefest this June?

later.............. nut

Geez my engine looks like sh.,compared to yours Bud!!!!
hopefully b/4 summer we'll have looking good!!!!

I seem to recall (again, with my feeble memory..;LOL ) that there was a sticker (which I thought it was yellow) near the hood light assembly; however, I look it up on the assembly manual, and they only show the emissions label near the left side latch of the hood. ;shrug

Yes.... there is a yellow warning label on the fan shroud that is missing from that picture. They do have a tendancy to want to peel off as mine is too.
