I have replaced the torn boots on my upper ball joints on my '90.
The factory manual says to torque the four upper ball stud mounting nuts to 19 ft.lbs.

Uh-uh.SNAP.SNAP.SNAP.:bang

I've already twisted three off.I'm using 1/4 inch grade 8 bolts.

My dealer doesn't sell the replacements individually, but tells me that the new ball joints will come with the replacement bolts.

So is this a misprint?Grade 8 1/4 inch is only good to maybe 15 lbs. if that much.

Maybe I should bore out to 5/16?They should be good to 22-23 ft.lbs.

;help

Upper ball stud to upper control arms, if thats what your talking about......? is 13 Ft Lbs. According to 95 manual. I don't know if this helps, but................ Hows the accuracy of your torque wrench? I borrowed one from a guy once & you would not believe it. He must have used it to work on Sherman tanks.:eek :eek :eek

uhhh.....

13 pounds sounds more realistic.

My manual must be wrong.:r

Anybody else?;help

Is there an easy way to check the accuracy of my torque wrench?:duh]

Anybody know the proper temperature to set the oven for frozen pizza?:crazy

How big is the pizza? What Kind?
1/4 inch, grade 8 bolts, I think the max. torque is 6 to 9 Ft. Lbs? At my age I have trouble reading these charts.

Depending on the type of torque wrench you have. Check with auto parts store for a lead on having it checked.:Twist

Wow big spread here

93 - 13 ft lbs

88 - 19 ft lbs

73 - 15-25 ft lbs

I'll bet on 15-18 those bolts are NOT that big.

And I'll bet their NOT grade 8!

Pizza somebody say pizza?

Vig!

Not inch lbs.

Home Depot,Lowes, and True Value all have "grade 8"bolts that snap at that torque setting. It is just a 1/4 inch bolt,soooo....

My parts guy at the Chevy house:

"Torque wrench?Aw hell,you Corvette guys!Just tighten the Sumbit*h up!*Torque wrench*..."

He's a trip.I've known him since,well actually before I could walk.
He retires next year and then whoosh there goes my parts discount.

So I just 'tightened that sumbit*h' up.

Too late for an alignment tonight.8:00 P here.

Now for the important problem, pizza. Just put in the micro on high till it starts to bubble...
that shud do it.:_rock

Well, then if yours says it as well....

OK.Next.

What bolts *do* come with new ball joints?Size,grade,color,paper,plastic,smoking,non-smoking,aisle preference, oink, moo?

1/4 inch bolts can't handle 19 ft.lbs.
At least not on this planet.

19 ft lbs sounds extremely high for a 1/4" bolt...even if the service manual does say so. It may be a misprint on all...probably supposed to be 9 ft lbs...which still seems high for 1/4"
Just a little back ground here...I'm a jet engine mechanic...and the 19 ft lbs which equates to 228 inch pounds is higher than we put on ANY bolt that small on a jet engine. Typically that small of a bolt gets from 28 INCH lbs-50" lbs. Or 2'lbs-4.17'lbs. Much more than that and they snap...I know.
