Finally got this one finished, and thought you all might enjoy this. This is my friend's '86. The base kit was the old Monogram 1/24 '85 Corvette. Wheels came from 2 Revell '04 Z06 kits, I used the front 17" wheels only. I then cast the emblem from the '85 wheels and placed it on the new wheels. The tires, wheel backs, brakes, sunvisor assebly, windshield, and third brake light all came from the '96 Grand Sport kit. Manual shifter and boot came from Monogram's '89 ZR-1. The engine and transmission is one of my own resin cast units with the 4+3 trans, pinned back together with the rest of the kit driveline, then plumbed and wired. The hood was then given a fuctional prop rod. The rear of the exhaust was lengthened and the mufflers moved closer to the rear, with some tubing used for the tailpipes to replicate the Flowmasters he has on the car. Interior floor has been flocked, and all outside emblems hand painted, including the www.motorsplusinc.com sticker on the rear window. The roof panel has been stowed in the rear of the car. Finishing it off is a photo-reduced license plate. The paint is 8 coats of Dupli-color GM Silver under 4 coats of clear.

Awesome work ! :thumb

out of curiosity, how many hours do you have invested ?

Awesome replication of his '86, plasticman! The detail is outstanding!

We have another member here that shares your passion for creating scale model mirror images of Corvettes, though he concentrates on Callaways. Here's a link to his thread in case you've not seen it.

Dang, that is insane! And I thought I was a die cast geek!

You are my hero!

Here is the extent of my patience... Had to do a bit of chopping and gluing to get the wheels to work properly.

The real one. Not a ZR1, unfortunately.

Where is the coke can??? Just kidding. In all honesty, are you for hire?

Two reservoirs

Outstanding.
The detail is almost beyond belief, I have never seen such an accurate reproduction to scale like this.

Thank you all for the kind words. I try to make these as real as possible. I honestly have no idea how many hours I have into these models, I try to do as much as I can when I am not working.
CSS996 your model looks good, and the real 40th with those wheels looks awesome!
85dougnash, no the master cylinder on the '86 has only one tank. The '85 however does have 2, as does my '89. There were a few years when they only had one.
Thanks again for all the compliments,
Ben

Ben, have you done a model of your coupe? If not, are you planning to in the future?

I've been into Corvette diecasts for several years now but I've not made any new purchases in a while because I simply ran out of room for them. Of course, the mass produced diecasts don't have anywhere near the detail of these models you guys make.

And CSS996 - that's an outstanding 40th Edition model - 1:1 scale and 1:18 scale!

Keep the photos coming!

XLR8, actually, my '89 coupe is in the VERY early stages of work right now. I am painting the body, and gathering the parts for the rest of the build. I had to have the local paint shop mix some paint for my front license plate cover last year, so I can use what's left of that paint. I am also working on a few others at the moment, here's a link to check them out on a modelling site.

Thanks for the compliments, guys. My model looks like utter crap next to plasticman's. I hesitated to share it, actually. But I really do love the C5 Z06 wheels on the real car.

I hope you are charging for these, Ben. I'd think any certified Vette nut would pay hundreds for the kind of work you do.

So is the carpeting (flocking) available at hobby stores? I'd like to do that to mine, as the rear hatch area is just black plastic. Do you have a preferred online source for that kinda stuff? Not much in the way of hobby shops in my neck of the woods.

I built a '66 or '67 Chevelle once, and laid down toilet paper on the roof to make a vinyl top on the car. I just painted over it, and was careful to keep the bubbles away. Actually looked pretty good. Well, for some dumb kid trying to make a pristine model look like a neglected barn find, anyway...

Thanks again for sharing your work. It is inspiring me to go a little more in-depth with my model. :beer
