Tom... I've been collection Lionel "O" gauge for years and sadly nothing is cheap, especially the post war (1946-1969) stuff. :L However, the nice thing about collectable hobbies is the price is generally negotiable and will rise and fall with the economy (which sucks) and with the train collecting market interest. Also, you may want to try and search for just the rail cars and not the entire set. Many times these sets are broken up and the pieces can be had separately. Train shows are pretty common throughout the country and you should be able to find one near your location sometime during the year.
