Morning Sickness Fix...

For the short term. It changed my mind about doing a rack&pinion this year. I used the Lucas power steering fluid additive, just siphoned enough out to fit in the 10 ounce bottle. Definite improvement accross the board. I have little faith in additives but this did work so far...

I have gotta agree heavily with RJS about this stuff, I had a PS leak on the rack as well and figured I would be replacing it this summer or fall.

I read a thread here about someone else using the stuff and figured I had nothing to lose.

Well I was right the leak is gone and I only topped mine up with a fairly small amount.

I put it in about a week ago and once it circulated the steering effort was reduced and it no longer binded on a cold start. I didn't have any leaks but it claims to stop them on the bottle...
Must spread some kind of teflon over the contact areas and make the fluid less viscous as well.
For 10 bucks it saved me doing a rack this year!

I put mine in just before I left on vactaion and a week later the steering was smooth as glass and no leak, usually after a week of sitting it sticks until it moves some.

Now there is no sticking, and I did not even use the whole bottle.

I'm pulling this from memory, I believe Gordon Killibrew advocates the Lucas stuff as a good maintenance idea....put a few squeezes in annually as a leak preventative, as well as a cure for morning sickness.

Stupid question # 612: Is morning sickness when the wheel takes effort to turn as though you have a "dead" spot like no power steering and then you hit a "live" spot where there is power steering?

I am suffering these symptoms and also a "oh no" noise from the PS Pump side of the engine compartment.

I am thinking PS pump bad. What about a rebuild or just replace?

Had this problem which only got worse, with the Vette and the BMW. now, great to hear Gordon recommends the Lucas, which I will add to all my cars with P/S as preventive mx.

Surely is a great and cheap alternative to buying racks and pumps. Seems we never used to have this issue with pre-rack cars.

Anwer #1. Yes. The first-turns-of-the-day feeling where it seems to bind or take inordinate effort to turn. Usually goes away once things warm up. The Lucas fixed this for me, can't believe it.
2. Make sure it's the pump. Did you put the Lucas in? It may alleviate some of that noise...

Had a power steering fluid leak also and topped it off with Lucas. Been over 8 months now and no leak. Same on my daughter's Buick. Swear by that stuff.

Thanks for the info. I have been dealing with other things on the car and have not tried the Lucas yet. Bought a jug, just haven't taken the time.

All I can say is WOW. I swapped out a 12oz bit of my PS for a 12oz jug of Lucas and the troubles are over. This stuff is amazing. I was sure that I would be replacing my PS system. This stuff is worth what it cost (which is not much) for sure.

Yep. I've got about 2K miles on since I put it in and still working well...
