A friend of mine has a 90 vert,it starts fine and drives fine but after it warms up the motor sounds like marbles in a washing machine!WTF?It sat for a year could it be bad gas? It also had a complete tune up not long ago including all new injectors.I saw all the receits, like I said it drives fine, but that noise!;shrug

Does it do it with the trans in gear and clutch disengaged ?
The transmission can tend to rattle if flywheel is bad or has been replaced with a non dual mass unit.

no it's not a tranny noise comming from the front of the motor, maybe a water pump going bad?;shrug

My L98 made a noise for a while after warm up and I had a heck of time figuring out where it came from. I knew it wasn't the water pump, but thought for a while it might be the timing chain. Using the listening through a long screw driver method I finally tracked it down to the AIR diverter valve located on the top front of the motor. Not saying that's your friends problem, but it's worth checking out.

Check the Belt Tensioner,Idler Pulleys and Alternator Bearings,They will sound just like marbles in a washing machine!!:thumb:thumb:thumb

Suggest after car is warmed up, some listen up front while another lightly press the gas. Mine was the power steering and have heard A/C compressors do that when they are go bad.

Since the car is a six-speed and the 89s had both the early ZF S6-40 and the early version of the dual-mass flywheel--both known to make a sound like is discussed in the first post--the first thing I'd do is clearly establish the source of the sound.

Does it come from the engine, the clutch housing or the transmission.

If it's coming from the motor, see Junk's post on tensioners and etc.

If it's coming from the clutch housing, your dual mass is shot.

If it's coming from the transmission it maybe normal or a problem depending on the loudness of the noise and when it occurs.

Thanks guys,I have pretty much ruled the tranny out.I think junkman may be right! The noise seems to be comming from the front of the engine.and low down in the front.:W

Well today I took the cover off my freinds 90 vert.started her up and guess what no noise- just a smooth quiet idle!whats up with dat?;shrugno rattling or nothing I dont get it.:W

Remove the belt and spin the Idler Pulleys and Check them for wobble, Spin AC Pulley and Alternator and listen Close,You may be able to hear a bad or loose bearing with out the engine running!!:thumb
