I bought an MSD 6AL for my 88 L-98. MSD had recommended this ignition unit for my car. They also recommended an MSD Coil (Part. 8225). The dealer did not have an MSD coil, so he suggested a Performance Distributor "Street/Strip" Coil Kit. The dealer also gave me an "MSD 6 to GM Dual Connector Wiring Harness" to connect the MSD Ignition unit with the coil. It doesn't fit.

I have checked the MSD website and found some wiring harness units, but can't really tell if they would fit. The Performance Dist. coil has one place to connect the MSD with what I would describe as a "3 pin/2 pin" single connector.

Just wondered if anyone out there has used the MSD 6AL without using an MSD coil.

Thanks,

Mike

On a stock engine??

Whaffore??

Sorry if I rain on someone's parade, but....

Having heard of MSD problems, including reliability and install issues; knowing that the stock ignition is FINE until one is sparking over 7000 rpm or boosted intake, I disposed of the MSD box I had planned for my HOT 406. Light my fires; light my tires.

Understand that spark plugs only use the electrical energy needed to fire and the stock unit is fine for most of us. Adding capability atop that already unused is a waste of cash. Money is better spent on having ignition components in good condition.

That said, most any coil will work just fine with the 6AL. Your unit , as mine did, should have included the proper wiring for the GM application.

As to other coils: I recommend checking for feedback from those that run 'em, as some coils are of higher quality than others. While not a huge GM fan, I believe their products surpass many aftermarket 'upgrades' in quality alone, but also in bang/buck. I believe you'll find, upon close inspection, that the HEI you have equals or surpasses what most 'hot' coils deliver.

I saw a huge improvement, ages ago, in the era of points and condensers, by installing a CD box on my mother's Pontiac. Understand though, that the stock ignition system was not even close to HEI, which the CD box approached. The Poncho liked the extra spark, but again, we're not talking the same apples.

Personally, I'd cash out of the MSD for another 'upgrade' that will deliver some bang.
