anyone had any experience with muffler eliminators? Are they loud? Seems they rely on the cat to quiet the monster. Any good?

When I had my mufflers off yesterday to paint them, I started the car without mufflers on. Man, it was loud! It would've been too loud for daily driving. I would've gone insane! The cat doesn't do a very good job of quieting the mufflers.

But I've heard Basani's before and they sounded awesome. Can't tell you how they sounded to the driver but I was behind him and it was very muscular. :_rock

I have them, and have had them on 3 different C4's. First off, starting the car with the mufflers off will make a different sound than with the muffler eliminators... you also get a different sound from different size pipe, different tips (size and shape) and the engine. (L98, LT1, LT4).

The loudest combination is round tips with large diameter pipe on an L98. LT1 and LT4 cars have a resonator that helps deaden more of the sound than L98 cars, but the L98 cars have a smaller diameter exhaust to help deaden the sound anyway.

For a good sound, I suggest a smaller diameter eliminator, with square/rectangle tips. This is what i have now, and it is louder than stock, but not so loud that you can't hear the radio, or have a conversation.

I put a set on my 92. I love the sound, but the next weekend after the pipes were installed, I put Dynamat over the entire inside to muffle the sound. I am one of those guys that turn the radio down to listen to the pipes though.

watch the rear facia

I had elims installed w/ the LT1 tips, and the tips were positioned just as the stock ones are--they did NOT stick out from the rear facia.

I thought the LT1 w/these elims had too nasty a resonance. I loved the sound at idle or high rpm though.

So if you do the elims, I recommend letting them stick out a little.

I went to a Power effects exhaust (found one used, could not resist).

I have a set of elims with LT1 tips on my 87. A friend of mine gave them to me and I swapped out the Walker Super Turbos that were on the car and it made a big difference in the sound!! :D At freeway speed, the car is whisper quiet and even hard accelaration on the freeway isn't really that loud. The car came with one of those Walker Y-pipes with the crossover pipe so that probably helps with keeping resonance down.
