The time is nearing where I have to replace my exhaust from rear y-pipe on back. I was originally thinking about sidepipes, but realize that is an unrealistic wish. When I bought my '81 it came with mufflers that are a twin tip design, so I have 4 tailpipes in all. I have no idea what brand they are, and cannot find a name on them, so I cannot directly replace them. What I am looking for is the closest replacement within a tight budget. I'm a broke college student so the cheaper the better. Looking for twin tip design.. and as LOUD as legally possible; I love the rumble. So what is everyones opinions?? Prices paid? Right now I am looking at these: http://www.madvet.com/shop?frame=4.119.1312 What else will I need besides a stock y-pipe to make this fit? What sort of hangers/hardware should I purchase? Thanks again for all replies.

I just put on Flowmaster 40's So far i like em.

For the ones you show, i don't think a stock Y will work. Or at least it will need to be modded

Hi there,

I have a set just like you are talking about that I just took off the vette when I install side pipes. The mufflers have very few miles on them. The little paper sticker with a part number on it is still there and you can read all the numbers clearly. They cost $180 new from Mid America. I do have some other pieces of the exhuast system that I removed. Most is nearly new; I just got this vette a couple months ago in a trade for my Eckler Daytona. Anyway I can make yopu a deal on the mufflers if you are interested.

I've also been thinking about flowmasters for the ol gal. Do you happen to have a part number for the specific ones needed? Are the 50's series louder or softer than the 40's? I recall one being louder than the other.

Copdog,

Thank you for your offer, but I am not prepared to buy the mufflers just quite yet. I'm trying to do all my research before hand so when the time comes I'll be sure that I made the right purchase. If you still have the parts when the time comes, Ill private message you and maybe we can strike a deal. Thanks again.

i don't have a part number, as you can pick just about any muffler you want. I went with a 2 1/2 offset inlet and center outlet, but also had an entire system fabbed up. If you do go this route, make sure you check ebay. I paid 40 per muffler plus shipping. Summit wants 60 or 70 per muffler.

here is a link to the vendor on ebay

Check flowmaster's site for sound files to compare mufflers. I think 50's are quiter then 40's.

just checked the guy i bought mine from....looks liek they upped the price to 57 per muffler.

Tatortot,

I just checked my new Mid America catolog and the mufflers are not in there anymore. I know ecklers still sells them. I can supply pictures if needed. I'm only looking to get around $100 + shipping for them if you get interested. If not no problem I'll post them in the for sale section.

Gary

CopDog,

By all means, post them in the for sale section. I appreciate the offer, but like I said, am really not ready to make any purchases yet.

On another note, I was looking at ecklers, and they have these: http://www.ecklers.com/product.asp?dept%5Fid=1328&pf%5Fid=A4239&mscssid=NBSCAENN17AM8JG89H7T3CTW9UGEF1C7

Anybody used or seen these before? Not familiar with the brand name. Also, it says direct bolt up, but doesn't look that way to me; hopefully that picture isn't the picture of the actual item.

One last question, sorry... Why do some mufflers just look like two pipes together, and then some have a circular collector almost? For example the set I posted above, vs. any stock muffler. Is there a difference in sound? Emissions? Thanks for any replies.

No the one you listed are not the one I was talking about, but do have a use set of those as well. They were my other 78 and sounded really good. They are a bit louder that the other ones I have, but not like side pipes. Some are a two piece unit made up of the muffler and then the bend back the the Y pipe is a separate piece. That was done to help get a better fit and for the difference between 2 1/4 and 2 1/2 in. pipes with the same muffler inlet.

As to emissions The muffler don't change that much if any other than for back pressure and noise. The one you listed will give the most sound you will get with a complete under car system with mufflers. I'll get some pictures tomorrow and try and get them posted. They look just like the standard muffler but have the twin outlets like the ones list here.

Gary,

Many thanks for your help again, your help has been priceless. Looks like these pipes are on the top of my list.. I have to narrow it down between these and flowmasters, but giving the price of only $150, and assuming they are louder (which I like) I think I might go with these. Another few questions... Will I need to buy seperate muffler hangers? And I assume its a 2.5 inch inlet, not the 2.25, on my L-81, correct? Any other hardware I will need for installation including y-pipe? I need to get a kit together to give to my mechanic to insall, and I want to make sure I don't miss anything. Thanks again!

If I remember correctly the hanger come with the mufflers, but I can not be sure of that. If your Y pipe is bad, then Yes you will need a new Y pipe. The ones I have are 2 1/2, but the whole system on the car was 2 1/2 from the headers back. The ad said that they are 2 1/2, so I would figure on that. Any good muffler shop can deal with that.

Gary

Much appreciated Gary. Yes the y-pipe is what started all this. It is so rusted the existing mufflers cannot be removed from it, so time for new y-pipe and back.

Well I have one of those too if you are interested. The only things wrong with it is I had an oil leak and there is some oil on it that I think can be cleaned off. The other thing is that it had been welded on and so it was cut off when removed. Other than that it has very few miles on it.
