Hi Guys, Help
my 98 coupe says "pull key-wait 10 sec" so I did..then the DIC says "service column lock" and when I try to move the car the fuel pumps are shutting down and it stalls..
When i bought the car i assumed the column lock recall was done because when i pulled the key out i could hear the column lock motor run but the wheel was never locked.good i assume ?..I see there is a column lock switch that has to cycle off and on for the BCM. Now when i start it i get pull key so i do and then get service column lock.? now when i pull the key i dont hear the column lock motor running at all.? I pulled fuse 25 to reset the BCM if it was locked and that was no good,,same problem and car is shutting down fuel.My codes are B2587 and B2592 which r column locked codes.
Can I fix this myself and what should I do or Buy to fix this.
Thx in advance,,Dave

:w:w:wHowdy Dave, Welcome to the club. This has been an on going problem with C-5's since they started building them. To make a long story short, there is a recall out that covers this repair ( I just had it done) and they almost have to redo the whole steering column. Call your local Chevy dealer and let them know what has happend and tell them that there is a recall on this problem and even the towing was paid for on mine. Good Luck.:upthumbsScott:beer

If you column is not locked when the key is off, then the recall has been done.
But some people are still having problems with the fix.
Basically, the column lock motor and the lock relay are out of synch., which disables the fuel pump.
My belief is that the motor is still operational, though it is not performing the locking function anymore, and if the motor fails to transit in the correct allocated time span then the relay will be disabled.
My belief is that the motors are defective, and therefore should be part of the recall, but they are not part of the parts involved with the recall.
This is only my opinion, but they could have saved a lot of customers a lot of problems by acknowledging the real malfuntion and not just disabling the lock function on all the steering columns.

In any case, it is a problem for a dealer to handle.
Whether you have to pay for it, in my opinion, is up to the interpretation of the recall scope and the parts involved.

I've had the same problem in the past and my column was repaired with a new column lock back in 2004. What does the column lock bypass do specifically? Does it just prevent the lock from happening. I would really like to have the column lock since I have a 6 speed and therefore doesn't require a key to put the transmission into neutral, allowing moving/stealing the car with ease.

column Lock

:wAt the time they had mine in the garage, they were debating back and forth on what was under recall and what wasn't, but after about a week of testing and changing they got the Technical guys at Corvette on it and they set them straight on the fact that what they had fixed on the original recall was not done right, and they told them to start all over and sent the parts they needed to do it right. I did not pay for one thing, including the tow of about 12 miles and has been working fine ever since the completion.:upthumbsScott:beer

Thx for the reply.
I called the # and met with the GM Rep at the dealership. He ran the whole repair history on the car and it appears that in 2004 they changed the "K" harness to #88952427 and removed the lock plate.I told the rep that they need to install the "K" harness #89023816."am i correctt"??
I myself found my problem to be FUSE # 23 was blown which feeds the column lock motor. If the motor dont cycle "lock & unlock" back to the BCM then my fuel shuts down..I replaced fuse #23 and we r up and running again. Is my column lock motor bad or was the fuse just weak from 10 yrs cycleing.?? Should i tell them to change the column lock motor and should i let them mess with changeing to the newer "K" harness.??? Is my problem the motor ,harness or should i just not let them tear my car apart.??? " I can carry spare fuses"

i have owned my 98 automatic for 6 months and YES ,this is the first #23 fuse that has blown.I did replace the fuse a week ago and it is still fine..my lock plate was removed and as i said the K harness was installed in 2004..
i turn on the key and the lock motor runs-- i turn off the key and the lock motor runs.Maybe the FUSE was tired from 10 years of the column lock motor cycleing. This could be just a fluke or the lock motor is on the way out.? I really dont see what else the dealer can do to help me.I really dont want to have the dealer mess with it. Besides,,if he puts in a New lock motor I'm afraid thats not part of the recall.Maybe i should just keep on Vettin.
Thx Guys
