Hi, i'm missing the proper key for my 94 corvette. It wont start because of the anti theft system. My current key is missing the resistor head. What the do?

You will have to have the VATS System Interrogated if you don't have a chip to see what resistance you need!~!:thumb This process can take sometimes from 15 minutes up to 3-4 hours,it's done with a special piece of equipment called an Interrogator! And is a trial and error method and most major Locksmiths and Dealers have them!:thumb

Thanks junk! I was just about to send a link to you and Paul to see if one of you could answer Tobben's question. :upthumbs

nah just do this, go on ebay and buy one of those kits with the 15 codes and I think you plug it into the vats wiring (orange & white wires) or yellow & white wires cant remember. Then you do the slow process to find the right resistance.

The vats decoder box is expensive about 300 bucks if memory serves me right so that isn't a cheap easy alternative to finding the resistance.

vats has a sleep mode so you have to wait about 5 minutes between trying different resistances and key has to be off while vats is taking a nap before you try next resistance.

when you find correct resistance just go to any gm dealer and get correct key and have it cut.

Thank you for your reply, it's most appreciated :) I'll go check out E-bay :thumb

Hey Junk, can't you get the code from the VIN? I did when I needed a new key. I went up to the Chevy dealer, gave them my VIN and voila! He had the correct resistor in 10 seconds, cut the key and now my key has been working since January when I got it cut!

I've never been that lucky!!;shrugI've been able to get the key cut,but have always had to interrogate the VATS system to find out the resistance! The last keys we've lost was on a 92 so maybe GM started keeping the the resistance code records since then!!;shrug;shrug;shrug
I've just made it a habit of checking the key resistance with a VOM when I put them in inventory and wright it down in the file since then!!It was a Real ordeal,we was Christmas shopping and somehow the FOB and All the keys got wrapped up in a present for my 16 yo daughter! She's still upset!! :L :D:D:D

I would be upset too! LOL!

That's a GOOD idea, ohming out the resistor is very simple and keeping it on file is an excellent idea. After all, they have a whole drawer of them at the dealer. Pick out the right one, pop it in and your off!

Talk at ya later Junk!

I haven't done that because everybody said i had a case since i was missing my key. But since you have a 94 and got the correct resistor, i will try that on monday. Thanks :)

Okay, I JUST ohmed my spare and my new one with a digital volt meter and it ohmed at 11.82 ohms. So I guess there could be quite a wide range of resistors. Maybe not. You'd have to ask the parts guy to see how many he has in his bin. So you COULD try trial and error if they'd let you at the dealer if they can't find it with the VIN. Otherwise you have to use the setup Junk was talking about it or let a dealer do it.

Let us know how you make out. I'd be curious what OTHER owner's keys ohm out at! ANYONE???

:w

I will let you know how it turns out :)
There are not too much knowledge about Corvette here where i live. Not even on the dealership. So finding the right kind of people who can help me is hard, but help from local vette owners and internet forum's, i see the end of the tunnel :D. I'm a Volvo mechanic, so figure it out by myself is a must;).

No one at the dealership could help me, they didn,t have any resistor heads. What i need to do is, to know the different ohm's. 15 different resistor's. I have ordered a ohmmeter that i can alter between 0 and 12.5 ohm, wire it to the 2 wire's that goes into the module. And try one at the time. I have asked Eckler's if they would mail me the 15 different code's, so i hope they do that later today.

VATS resistance values

This is a list of values from an old post (2006) and I believe they are correct. As you can see, the values quoted earlier in this thread are actually kilo-ohms resistance.
In the US there are RadioShack stores that sell consumer electronics where one can buy resistors for a few $ per 100 of various values. Are there similar electronics outlets near you? Then make up your own value by combining standard values in parallel and series combination. Use your new ohm meter to get precise values. Place the resistor combination into the connector at the bottom of the steering column in place of the leads from the key tumbler. If you don't know how to combine resistors, post and I or someone can explain.
Good luck.
PS This was a nice table of values but the editor function displays it as only a single column. Post if it is too obscure. And be sure to wait >5-10 minutes between trials with the key out to allow the VATS time delay to lapse, as Topless recommended above.

Thank you very much for that reply :beer
Although, i recieved a mail from Eckler's today and they gave me these values:
# 1key .40, #2- .52, #3- .68, #4- .88, #5- 1.13, #6- 1.46, #7- 1.86, #8- 2.37, #9- 2.99, #10- 3.73, #11- 4.73, #12- 6.01, #13- 7.45, #14- 9.51, #15- 11.73 OHMs.
I asked them if they were kilo OHMs and they replied no.
But if i compare these to the values you gave me, then i see that the values from Eckler's are kilo OHMs.
Now i know for sure i'll have it up and running by the end of the week or earlier :D
Just have to buy some resistors, in my nearby electronic store. They even make different type's of resistors as well. I'll give you a report if it start's or not.
Thanks :)

My bust fellas. I just checked with my Fluke 23 Volt/Ohm meter and it WAS 11.82 K ohms. So it IS KILO ohms.

I just wanted to clear that up. That is a LOT of resistance.

Hope you work it out Tobben!

Paul

Tobben

I apologize what seemed a easy task, I didn't realize you live in norway and its not as easy as finding the resistance and walking into a GM dealership and saying you need say a code 7 passkey.

I might have a verified code 15 pass key decoder I will look for it today I am not sure if its the same as your vettes but if it will work and not to hard to change on your vette I can get you what you need. if you just pay the shipping.

Thanks :)
Corvette's and Mustang's are very popular in Norway, alongside other american models. Mostly old one's though, new american models with big v8 are really expensive. Part's and knowledge are easy to find to older american car's, but there are few who know's about modern one's. As there isn't too many of them.

Actually i had a 66 Mustang and i managed to trade it for the Corvette. Nice deal :thumb

It finally starts. And it runs great. :)
Thanks for your help :beer

How'd you do it?????? We all wanna know!!! Well, at least I do! :chuckle

Good work! :beer :upthumbs :)
