Mysterious unidentified light sensor

Hi,
I recently got my first 'vette and noticed the other day that there is a light sensor set into the dash just to the left of the 'trip odometer' text. I found this strange and have no idea why its there- can't seem to get any reactions from insturments or anything else, but it's a factory installed component as the mounting hole has a molded radius. Any idea what this is/does?

Have you tried holding your finger over it for a few seconds to see if the dash gets brigher ?

That is a monitoring device that was installed by your insurance company to keep a track on you and what is going on in your car.

Seriously, If you cover the sensor the dash lights should dim as it is reading it being dark and the brightness is not needed. Then uncover the sensor and the dash lights should get brighter.
