Clear coat peeling

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the bottom back corner of the left quarter panel where it meets the bumper the clear coat from the edge has lifted and broke off about 1/8 of an inch wide and about 1/2 in long. I took it to the GM body shop and they said they could reapply some clear coat on oit and blend it but I would be able to see it. He suggested reapplying the clear coat on the whole quarter panel. The Dealership is paying for it as I noticed it when I bought it last week. Anyone have any thoughts on this or experienced anything like this? Should I let them redo the whole clearcoat on quarter panel?

Thx inadvance for your input.

Story Continues...

Well I got the car back from the body shop after they took 5 days to re-clear the quarter panel. I got it back yesterday and found a crack behind the wheel about the height of the reflector. The crack was freash in the clear. I was about 1 inch long from the inside of the panel from the wheel well edge wraping around toward the flat part of the quarter panel just below the level of the red marker.

I can feel the crack on the backl of the panel too so it's right through. I got the dealership manager that approved my deal to look at it and the manager of the body shop. They figured they cracked it when putting on the rear bumper after the spray. I was livid!!!! They offered to repair it. and repaint the area and redo the clear again. I said that doesn't change the fact that there is a new crack there. I'm concerned that it could crack again later even though the offer a guarentee. It annoyes me that its there even if fixed. I asked for a new panel. They said the paint wouldn't match and they would have to feather the door as well. THey begged me to be able to fix it and that I would never see it. They also offered me free lifetime oil and lube for all my frustration.

I'm thinking of 3 options:
1. get it fixed and take the lube and oil.
2. Fix, lube and oil plus more compensation (not sure what I should ask for)
3. I have 30 days from date of purchase to return the car for a full refund. That expires in 10 days. They will fix it on Oct3.

What should I do???? Having a hard time finding other 2003 Z06's in silver in Canada. Also I know the car is in great condition with 9000km on it and not engine problems. Not sure I can find another like it in the future that won't turn out to have problems.

Help!!!!

Take the fix, the free oil changes, and see if they can give some kind of extended warranty. but ONLY if you trust them. Things do happen when working with fiberglass. I would suggest you keep that Z06, since mechanically its in good shape. The rest is just cosmetics, but the delaer is responsible for it.

Good Luck, I hope it works out for you.

:w

I would let them fix the damage subject to your final inspection, I would request somthing in writing that if that area of the car becomes defective again in a certain amount of time it is still subject to repair at GMs expense.

I WOULD NOT take the oil and lube offer. Do you really want to give them many more oppertunities to handle you car ????

It is minimal bodywork. Get it in writing that anymore defects in that area they must fix. Wait tell you start seeing all the chips that develop by the rear brake intake duct, you’re really going to sheet! After all, you are going to drive it right, or will it be a garage queen? Maybe you can get them to pay for it to get fixed somewhere else that you trust. Good luck.

They fixed it and repainted the area and recleared it. Got a life time guarentee in writing too and lube and oil for life. They also polished out any other scratches on the car. THey did a good job but screwed up on one scratch on the friont bumper. Caused a quarter side hole in the clear with a buffer. THey cheaply resprayed the area and sprayed some clear on it. I was ****ed with the poor job so they relpainted the area and cleared the whole bumper but I had to pay for half :( Now the paint is to dark on one side where they had to repaint. I'm talking to them about that now.

I know your frusteration, I really hate the first ding or scratch in my pride and joy. Wait until you high center on a speed bump located in the middle of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Seattle. You hear the paint being scratch and nothing you can do about it, the damage is done and I was going over it feathering the clutch. Damage is going to happen if you plan on enjoying it at all. You can trailer it, garage it, and polish it, but more importantly are you going to enjoy it! I do volunteer work in a rest home occasionally. I don't think that anybody in there thinks, gee "I should have kept my car in the garage more instead of taken it for a drive. It's nice to have, should be respected, and taken care of, but nobody remembers with fondness the good times you could have had if the car were in show room condition. Actually the only person who cares about those scratches/dings is the next owner. Have fun in the car and get over the imperfections. It came from the factory with enough imperfections if you look close enough. - Ron

paint flaws

When I got my 2004 millenium yellow vette, I noticed several paint flaws. Dirt specks, runs, and buffer swirl. On a new Vette! The dealership took care of the swirl and the runs, but I overlooked the dirt specks as they were in inconspicuous places. I expected a lot better paint job from G.M.!!!!
