Since I bought my 1967 the door pull/locking mechanisms have never worked properly. It's time to get things fixed. The problems plague both doors. Here is a synopsis of the situation:

-from exterior, doors open fine with pushbuttons on handles
-car can be locked from exterior with ignition key
-interior door pull mechanisms (chrome knobs) are not spring-loaded and wobble about. They don't actuate anything....Even if the springs are broken surely something should happen.
-the chrome knob will not open the door; I have to wind down the window and push the outside button
-interior door lock knob does not lock the doors

I would appreciate advice on what might be the problem(s) and what the remedy(s) may be.

Paul I repaired this on my 66 some years ago.

What i found on mine was that the door latching locking mecanism was full of 40 year old grease . I soaked them in a can of carburator cleaner and hit it with compressed air to get all of the old out. I then re-greased it

Now on to the door pulls mine were all sloppy and wobbely I replaced them with reproduction ones from paragon.

it worked for me

Larry,
Are you speaking of the strike plate mechanism at the end of the door?

Hi!

Pull you interior door panels. The most difficult part is the removal of the clips that secure the window handles. I use a small hook to pull the ends and always orientate them so I know where to grab them the next time.

You will have linkage that your round door knob/pull actuates. The linkage has small clips that hold it in place. Some times the clips falls off this linkage or other linkage and you are not operating the catch.

As Larry has stated, after years of lubricant and dirt they become hard to work and need a good cleaning. I have also increased the bend on main rod from the knob/lever to the catch to provide a greater throw or movement at the latch.

No not the piece attached to the body but the component inside of the door itself that the door pull and door lock actuates I will see if I can find my before and after photos from the 66'S rebuild,

I have the 63 door panels and windows out of the car, so went to the barn and took a few pictures of the door latch assembly. I will be cleaning and lubricating prior to final assembly.

Hope this helps!

Second picture down was what mine looked like with the exception of some red over spray in stead of white ,and some bigger blobs of grease dripping off. The carb cleaner also melted all of the over spray off.

on my 64 the driver door does not seem to fully pull the mechanism enough to get it to release.....sometimes it does, most times if feels like I need to bump the door with my should to get it open....is this the same kind of thing?

Now everyone knows why Sharon says I have enough projects in the garage.....a not to get any more until I get my current ones done.....each car has something that it needs....and me.,.....well I love to drive them.....

I think you could have one of two different problems. The first could be cleaning and adjustment as Larry described in an earlier post. The second could be a hinge adjustment that would take the pressure off the post or jamb catch or if the hinge is OK I would try adjusting the catch on the jamb. I would start with the catch. Hinge adjustment is not my favorite job. A third thing you can try is to put a slight Z-bend in the rod that travels from the knob to the catch. This will take a little of the play out of the pivot action. The Z-bend process worked on my 65.

Thanks for the comments and pics. They are very useful. Looks like a busy Saturday afternoon is in my future!
