I just left the local GM dealer where he told me that a bulletin was put out to Chevy dealers about the wrong type of oil rings being installed in my 04 Z06. While it is not any type of recall, he says I am entitled (and encouraged) to have this work performed under the warranty. He says they take the heads off, drop the pan and disconnect all the rods. They then pull the pistons out through the top and put new rings on. They then put the whole thing back together. Takes about three days.

My question is this: My car runs fine and doesn't appear to burn oil (although the service man said I was 1.5 qts low today. And, since he told me all this, I have been looking in the rear view mirror to see if I can see any smoke, which I can't. Should I have this work performed??? I have 17K miles on the engine, and have absoolutely no leaks. I'm afraid by doing this work, other things might start to go wrong.

Can anyone out there tell me where I can locate this bulletin, and have any of you had this work done on yours (with what results).

That is the first time I have heard anything about oil consumption on 04's.

I just checked- nothing here yet in the tech center/knowledgebase.

Maybe C4C5Specialist can shed some light on it. I would definitely want to get confirmation of the problem before taking it apart.

Thanks, Tammy. I checked a little further and found out it is TSR # 01-06-01-023A. Hopefully I can get some additional feedback before I maka decision to let them tear into it.

Alan,

That bulletin is in the Knowledgebase (click here), but it is for the 99-2002's.

Is your dealer aware that you have an 04?

No way? Damn, they would need your car for a couple of weeks to get that done

According to the service manager, they need the car for 3 days. They say they remove the heads and intake and the pan. They then unbolt the rods and lift the pistons out. They replace the rings and then put everything back together.

I guess this means I can replace my pistons without having to take the engine out of the car?

Yes you most Definitely can!!:upthumbs gmjunkie!!

I haven't heard about this in anything newer than an '01. I had my engine valley cover replaced before I did my blower. If you remove your throttle body, do you have oil in your intake? That's how I found out about the valley cover replacement. I was installing a ported throttle body and found oil all over the inside of my intake.

That's good info on the piston replacement without engine removal. I need forged pistons anyway. My rings are on their way to meet their maker.

DONT let anyone touch your car!! You have no oil issue, the only thing you would end up with are scratches from the monkies who did the work!!!!:W

I would find another dealer to work on my Vette! Seems they don't even know how to read a TSB, etc. - wouldn't trust them to actually turn wrenches!

I tend to agree. I'm going to just monitor the oil level, and only have something done if it is really using large amounts.
