Just purchased 77 Vette, 4 speed. Have replaced rear shocks, rear spring hanger bushings. Have a clunking noise when getting on and off the throttle. Checked rear wheel bearings, seemed OK. Differential mount seems OK. Universals seem OK. Thinking it might be trailing arm bushings, but is their any way to check without tearing down. Havn't replaced torsion bar bushings yet, maybe a possibility, but they do not look bad. Any help appreciated.

Had the same sort of thing recently with my 87 vette everything seemed ok however I took the spider traps off the half shafts and the u joints were shot ! the cap was even cracked ! replaced them all and all is right with the world again. When I did a closer inspection before removing everything with the car on jack stand I had a buddy turn one wheel back and forth with the car in neutral and I could see a VERY slight movment in the joint. I have seen other vehicles with bad u joints and man you could really tell I dont know why the Corvette is so different but it is good luck . :beer

Thanks for the comeback on the rear end noise. Had the car out again today to see if I could determine noise. Do not get the klunking noise on acceleration, just on decelleration. Will check the U-joints again, I still think it might be suspension, like torsion arms.

Mileage??

How high is the mileage?

My first guess is U-joints.

:w

Over 100,000 miles. I was considering the problem as U-Joints, but talked to mechanic at work today and he seems to think I would be getting a clicking sound when I turned the wheel, which I don't. Being as I am only getting it when I let up on the gas, he seems to think it might be something in the supsension and advised to to again check the differential mount. Will get under this thing this weekend and look it over good to see if I can see the problem.
