Normal Oil PSI for 87 TT

What is the 'normal' Oil presure for an '87 TT?

Here's why I'm asking. Ever since I bought mine about 4 years ago, my guage has always read 80 PSI (the max for the guage) from idle to wide open, unless the water temp went above around 225 and the oil ran a little hotter then normal. Then it would drop to 70 PSI, maybe 65.

That was up until last week, when I switched from a Fram to a K&N oil filter. Now, at idle, the oil presure runs 50-60 psi, under normal driving, she runs between 70-80 psi.

Just want to make sure this is normal and the reason for the change is the K&N allows better oil flow. Thanks.

Wouldn't a crummier flowing filter cause a lower oil pressure? One thing you might try is to confirm the oil pressure sender is accurate (or just replace it as they aren't that expensive). My regular '87 had some weird, disconcerting values for the oil pressure after I bought it. It turned out it was just the sending unit. Once it was replaced, the numbers were happy ones. :)

You guys don't use ACDelco filters (at least in lieu of Fram)? I've always been satisfied with them. They aren't too expensive and seem to do a great job.

Oil pressure is a measure of the oil's resistance to flow throug the engine. The pressure is the amount of force required to push it through the engine. That said... It would seem that your K&N filter is flowing quite a bit better than the Fram, which would make since. For comparision you would see similar results if you were to run an engine with 10W30 oil and then switch to a 5W20....not a drastic drop in pressure but a noticable one.
