1963 Roadster
I’m looking to verify my engine components listed below. I have a 63 roadster which came with a 64 engine. My guess is that the block was replaced and all of the 63 components (heads, intake, etc.) were reused. I am planning on taking the motor out this winter to fix some of the problems with it. The main reason for the engine pull is that one of the valve stems is mashed over so I guess that will require a rebuild on the head. Also the clutch is shot and the oil leak is driving me nuts. If the components are mostly 63, I will rebuild towards a 63 motor. If not I will rebuild towards a 64, 365HP motor. Any help with the numbers would be greatly appreciated. Also, what exactly is the difference between a 63 340hp and a 64 365hp motor? Where do the extra ponies come from?

Thanks,
Tim

Here is the correct numbers for that car....Block...3782870... heads....3782461.
The 340HP motor has a carb and the 365HP was fuel injection
If I were rebuilding the motor I would look around and find a correct motor and heads to make it a matching numbers car.... but you also have to look at the date codes to make it all match up...the motor and other components of the engine should be built just before the car was assembled...Get yourself a Corvette Black Book and it will give you all the info you need....especialy on the matching numbers ...

The pad stamp is probably F1031RE (not F103TRE), which says it was originally a '64 327/365hp, installed in a '64 Corvette built on December 4, 1963.

The intake is from a '63 327/340hp

The AFB carb is from a '64-'65 300hp

461 heads were used from '61-'66; the one you show is from July of '62

The 7901 exhaust manifold was used in '62-'63 (2.5")

The 7902 exhaust manifold was used in '62-'65 (2.5")

That valve cover was used from mid-'59 through '67

The extra 25hp between the '63 327/340hp and the '64 327/365hp comes from a different intake, a Holley instead of an AFB, and the "30-30" cam instead of the "097" Duntov. The 365hp was carbureted, not fuel-injected; the L84 fuelie was 375hp.

John,

I really appreciate the info. I wanted to make sure I knew what I had before I head to Carlisle. I think I will stick with the 340hp build after all.

Thanks again.

Mike R,

Thanks for the heads up on the Corvette Black Book. I picked it up today. Some good info in there.
