Does anyone know where I can get one of these that plugs into the diagnostic port of the car?

I can get one through the people that make the software that I wanted to use, but they want you to buy the whole kit for 300 bucks, including the software, and the wires and what not.

One other thing...you can buy one already made here...I think you can also buy the parts but you have to buy the whole kit...which is only a few dollars less then the entire cable.

Yeah I will have to read over that tomorrow thanks for the link. I was going to use a version of turbolink, but does anyone know of anything better out there?

I made my own 2 transistor cable($5 in parts) from Craig Moates site and for a plug i used 3 brad nails stuck through a piece of plastic. Not fancy but very effective. For software i use Datamaster ( free for 20 scans) and Craig Moates software (always free).
Here is a link to the Datamaster software.http://www.ttspowersystems.com/software/dm3.4.1/32/32-full.zip

Well I am a retard, and since my laptop isn't here yet I had to take my brothers word for it.... bad idea. Come to find out the port on the back, is like a video out. So now I need a USB to serial I guess... :(

I'm a daily driver Max so I don't do the beauty thing to speak of, you and 0096 got that covered ;) loved your snow pics, and my car isn't nearly as nice as you guys and lots of othersn :beer

Vettefan, not trying to mess up your thead, just happy to see Dan here, another great addition to CAC :cool

Now, I haven't heard of a USB connector for the type of programs you're talking about. I have a serial cable from one of the sources already mentioned that I don't use, cost me $45 as I recall, but not a lot of info available from the software and stuff.

Eventually I went with the EASE scantool which is really great, although I've really needed someone local "tjwong" who I'm fortunate to have closeby to do the tuning and chip stuff. Hope this is some help. What is it that you want to do exactly?

Don't worry Moon your fine, you've been more help to me, then I could ask for. Well the way my buddy has his setup is that he has the connector for the OBD I port, then the serial cable to go into the connector, then a USB to serial cable to go into his laptop, but we tried to connect it to my car, but it would not work. From what I understand there are two kinds of data transfers a high rate, and a slow one, and I cant remember which one mine was, but the cable wouldn't work.

The serial to USB adapters in my experience are questionable. Some work and some just don't. I think I got a Keyspan that worked OK with my computer for a while, then the computrer crashed, HARD. We almost lost the HD. I haven't used any of the stuff on my laptop since cause it's my best computer with the largest HD and I really can't afford a new one.

If you're interested I've got the cable an older IBM Thinkpad with a serial port, setup with a basic program that that I bought for the car, I'd sell it to ya cheap and it works.

'85 and up are the higher rate, 8192 bits/sec I believe (older ECMs are 160bps).

Have y'all tried WinALDL?

Good point Bill. I suggested WinALDL to Justin, he was trying to use another program, but he didn't say which one.
