od fliter fluid change

My 88 4+3 OD works well,I had it disconnected because my shifter switch doesnt work and I didnt like the way the ecm was controling the OD but its actually at the shop now getting a toggle switch put in, i bought the car in December and i want to have the OD filter changed, but i have no clue of the last time it was changed, I've heard many horror stories of automatic OD cars failing due to the changing the trans filter..but what about the OD filter on my manual trans, culd changing it hurt my trans? Since i dont know when it was last changed should I have it changed or just leave it alone?

If the filter has never been changed, change it ASAP.

Fail to do that and the O.D. will fail.
