Odometer question

I just looked at a 1990 convertible at a local dealer and he said the mileage was somewhere around 90k. He told me that the computer went bad and the previous owner had a dealer replace it, but when they did it zeroed out the odometer. He said this was done at 60k and the previous owner drove it another 30k so now he has to say the mileage is unknown.

I would think if this was true then what would stop some clown from removing the computer and reseting the odometer every few years?

Thanks!

from what I understand, the computer actually shuts the car down after a pre-set number of miles (very low number, like 100 miles) if a new computer is put in without being 'set' by the dealer to match the old mileage.

IMO, Either this dealer is retarded and the car actually has 30k on it, or he is trying to pull something on you that is really shady.

Swapping the computer does not impact the odometer. The odometer is a self contained unit that gets it's impules from the transmission (cable or otherwise). The only way to zero out an odometer is to tamper with it. Even if the odometer was replaced any reputable mechanic or dealership is required by law to document the replacement and ensure the mileage reads the same as it was before the replacement. I got first hand expereince with this when I had some issues with a Dodge Dakota R/T I owned that came from Canada and was sold in the US by a Dealer. If your interested in the car I would run a carfax on it at a minimum.

He told me it the previous owner was his "father in law" and he drove it up from Texas. He bought a "01" and he was sellling it for him.

Now I know why he looked so weird when I asked him about a carfax report.

BTW- It was a 90 red/black auto for $11,400.

I guess I will keep looking.

Thanks for the help.

The odometer digital display data comes from the car's CCM (the body computer). If the CCM is replaced, a GM technician must use a TECH-1 to enter the odometer reading from the old unit, the car's VIN, and certain options installed on the car. The odometer input is in 6 mile increments so it may not be possible to enter the exact odometer reading from the old unit.

If this is not done within 100 miles of driving, the new CCM will not accept odometer data from the TECH-1. The car will still function fine, it just shows the odometer reading from 0. Most states will require a statement on the certificate of title that effectively states that the odometer reading has been modified, even though the CCM had been updated.

Just for your info, I bought a nice 1990 convertible 6 speed with near new top, very good tires, and near new clutch with 69k on it for $10,000 in June of 04. Good luck .

I have a '95 Vert ZF6 speed in showroom condition that I would consider selling for a fair price...too many new things to mention here...all stock except for the Blackwing...:)
my email is usacorvetter@att.net...I do not really need to sell it...it is a tight car...:beer

So the odometer would still work the normal way but just start over at zero right?

What would keep some clown from removing the CCM and then reinstalling it so that he could reset the odometer.

Once the CCM has miles on it beyond that 100 miles point, it cannot be changed. There is no provision to reset that data field using a Tech-1. Only a new or remanufactured CCM can have miles entered before it reaches the 100 mile figure.

I would assume that a dealer would not want to try and enter a much lower odometer reading in a new CCM than the value from one that was removed. That would be fraud and probably a federal crime.

This vette looked like it had 90k on it. It had new 5 spoke wheels and tires and the paint looked ok. The seats looked like someone had spend many hours sitting in them.

I am not ready to buy just yet so I didnt waste the guys time by driving it.

The hunt for my 1st vette has been fun so far.

Thanks for your help.
