Has anyone heard that if there are white lines between the digits on the odometer, that it has been tampered with? Thanks in advance

Never heard of that. Could you take a picture of what your actual odometer looks like? I am not exactly sure what you are talking about. Are you concerned that it was rolled back, or just unplugged for a while???

Here is the link, actually Stu pointed it out to me initially and I have researched the white lines and found out that white lines between digits that aren't lined up indicate rollback. Do you guys think the digits are misalligned in the picture. Seller has offered to sell me the car for $6300 now. I am concerned why drop the price that much, he says he is in financial trouble. Let me know your thoughts, anyone...

This is the odometer in question:

The digits appear out of line to me. Only time I have seen that is when the odometer has been messed with.

So are you guys saying that the numbers need to be straight across. I just turned 138 k in the 4 runner, and they came across fairly straight but not perfect.

Man, that's got to be the slickest picture-scrolling applet I've ever seen on an auction. And Google, now... enter a VIN and it automatically recognises it and asks if you want a CARFAX on it.

CARFAX, btw, says there are 7 records. Might be worth paying out to see if any of them list a higher mileage.

FWIW, the 2nd digit on my odometer, which is also a 4, is higher than the numbers around it (though not by much) and I know for a fact that mine wasn't rolled back... at least not any time recently. I found receipts and such under the seat and in the storage bins when I got the car that had appropriate dates and mileage going back quite a ways. I don't have any visible white lines, though. Between the digits is a uniform grey.

That said, the car also looks like a lower-mileage car. Especially for a Florida car, it's immaculate and doesn't look terribly faded. Either someone put in a ton of money replacing really shot parts with only SOMEWHAT aged parts, or it's good. Also, what's the difference in value between a Vette with 184000 mi and one with 84000 miles, after 20 years? I'd say not much more than a grand or two, hardly worth going to such trouble.

Now if the odometer said *16000* miles, then I'd seriously worry.

[EDIT] For grins and giggles, I ran a similar car through Kelly Blue Book (www.kbb.com) to see what the difference would be, local to me. At 84000 miles, it's suggested to sell at $8400. At 184000 miles, $6800. At *284000* miles, $6600. Not a big difference for what might be a lot of work and outlay.

I don't think my odometer is straight in the Escort It has a little over 64 K, and if somebody rolled that thing back they really need to get a life...:L

Carfax should be able to help with this, I think.

If I read the other thread correctly a CARFAX was run, and looked a little suspicious. Thus the idea of rollback was brought up.

I'd be a more than a little cautious here. He's probably caught on to your suspicions about the odometer and wants to unload it. Just my .02 Look at all the cars he has for sale and not cheap cars! Financial trouble? If he does I doubt if $6300 is going to help him much.

I thought the same thing all high end cars and paintings, I just don't get it, his feedback is 100%, However he seems eager to dump it, what do you guys think for $6300

Think I will walk away and keep looking

$6300 is a pretty good price, the car looks good even if the odo has been rolled back. What did the inspection show? You did go ahead and have the inspector look at it didn't you?

I canceled the inspection, If it was close by I would take a mechanic with me and pusue it, however the inspection company I had hired originally was more or less a cosmetic inspector, looking for bodywork and just to make sure everything works. I'm more worried about transmission, engine, brakes, u joints, etc. Just got a little suspicious when he offered it to me for 6300

Probably smart decision.

You need to have it checked out. If its a tranny like mine was. $1800.00. A motor, who knows. Who knows if the car even looks like that. You haven't seen it in person. Amazing things you can do with photoshop. A bodywork guy we know says he gets a lot of EBay cars in, horror stories. Be carefull.

The first two digits have been rolled. When they are moved out of original sequence you will see the thin metal edge seperate the digits that do not show up with the rest of the numbers.

I bought my '86 with 52k on the clock. To make a long story short I ran a Carfax on it recently and it said the mileage wasn't correct. I looked at the mileage from Carfax when the new title was issued to me and it was correct.{had to get a new one when I bought it because the guy I bought it from had it in his dad's name and then his dad signed it over to his son's name and there wasn't a place for me to sign} Anyway, when the Atlanta DMV issued the new title they flipped the mileage and had it at 25k!!!! I'm ****ed at that one! I don't guess there is anything I can do about it now!

Only 1 out 10 84-89 clusters that we see has the original mileage. If done correctly, the only way to tell is to remove the odo assembly for inspection. The condition of the car should be your guide-nothing else.
