opinions - don't fix it if it ain't broke

Had a discussion with a local Vette specialist shop. My 86 at 110k is about ready for a clutch job. I was going over what I needed to replace, I said I guess while I have it open I should replace the rear main seal. He replied " If it ain't leakin don't touch it" what is your opinion?

For what it's worth, I agree with the mechanic.

I can understand his hesitation - it's not leaking, you swap with a new one, and then another seal (front main, for ex.) becomes weakened, and she's off the road again. However, the other side of the coin in regard to preventative/restorative maintenance.................I'd have him do it.

I agree with the Wrench Man!!!!However,I can't remember when GM changed from a 2 piece rear main seal!!If it's a 1 piece seal "THAT" is only accessible by removing the Engine or Transmission!! In that case I would Replace the seal and even add a Sneaky Sleeve to the Crankshaft for certainty it won't leak!!

I wouldnt worry about it if it isnt leaking.You could be opening a can of worms messing with it.I am speaking from a mechanics standpoint here,and Murphys law always applies,always.Especially if your having someone else do it.(the seal change may go well,but he screws something else up in the process.i.e. more money)Just my 2 cents.

I think the one piece seals started in 87. If it's a one piece see how it looks. I go with your wrench, leave sleeping dogs lay.
My 215k mile 87 doesn't leak and it's never had any seals changed.
