I'm resurrecting a '68 basket case, so the body is off presently. After finishing frame/engine/suspension etc, I need to remount body to fit new door sill reinforcements, doors and bumpers. Also, would like to rewire car at this stage, and get it in good running condition, so as to not scratch new paint. My painter wants to then remove body for painting. I would like to understand his approach better, as I'm thinking with careful masking, why can't the car be painted while on the frame? Would appreciate hearing about all pros and cons of doing this.

I have done both and the body off will give you a much better job. It is more work but from the sounds of it you are already doing allot. I can usually spot some overspray when painted with the body on. Whatever you decide I hope it turns out the way you want it.

the only thought i have of pre-painting,what if you ding it while putting it back together? as far as overspray, the guy painting it must have painted with the body on before.proper care while painting will produce an overspray free job.

Painted mine on the car. I didn't want to risk chipping or getting any stress cracks in the body by doing a off car paint. Good luck.
