Today I noticed paint flaking off the rocker panel of My black 81 exposing what appears to be glossy aluminum.I checked the picture section of this web site and noticed several 81s with similar rocker panels. My question is was this an option? If so,how was it noted on the build sheet? And finally how hard will it be to strip off the old paint to get it back to original?

No, it was not an option. Many people strip the paint and polish the Al with, I assume, varying grades of steel wool. I think that's one of the things that distinguishes '80's from '81's; 80's had bare metal rocker arms (and rear glass molding), while '81's had painted black. Hope this helps.

As I remember it, it isn't alu but stainless steel. Damn hard to get all the scratches out and polishing is a waist of time.

You could probably strip the paint, polish the aluminium and use Shark Skin to protect it, if you like the bright work look. Personnaly, I like mine semi flat black poweder coated....
