I took some photos of the paint job I did on my 86 three years ago and I can send them to anyone that's interested in seeing how it came out. For a FIRST TIMER painting a car using a compressor and HVLP gun in my garage at home, and only spending $650.00, I am well satisfied.

The photos are from all angles on an overcast day (I even took a photo of the overcast sky and you can see the clouds in the shine too). They show the good and the bad; no fudging. We all know that dark colored cars show wax in the crevices. I hadn't attacked it with the old toothbrush yet. What you see is what you get.

It taught me a lot too. Liked to spray extra coats of clear on all edges to prevent sanding through when color (wet) sanding the clear. There's a 2" spot that taught me that lesson (dare you to fine it).

Ignore all the parking lot stuff; my car is a daily driver and gets banged and hit by rocks coming off the tires of cars and truck and banged into by careless door openers, etc. Remember this is after three years on the road.

Email me at Chippy266@aol.com if you're interested. I tried to post them on photopoint but they're out of business because of $$.

Better to have them on your PC anway, that way you can magnify them if you have Microsoft Photo Editor or some such program. It won't win in any "best paint job" competition, but those on a budget should appreciate what can be done right at home.

BTW, I just found out that I can't send all of them to Yahoo or Hotmail accounts, even when all zipped up and divided into 7 photo packets. I guess those email accounts have small mailboxes.

I have to send them one at a time, but if anyone REALLY needs to see them all, I can take the time (real PIA though) to send them. Sorry.

Just trying to help.

Hey Jake,

Why don't you just upload them to the Gallery right here on CAC, then everybody can enjoy them?

Painting your own car is a lot of fun, and it is scary. The good news is, you can always sand it down and start over. At the current prices to do an all over job on a Vette- $3-$7,500, doing it yourself (even if you have to do it twice) is a bargain.

So, what are you waiting for......go log into the gallery and upload away......

Sure. I'd be happy to, but how? Will the site accept 20 different shots? That would take up a lot of space.

I mentioned this before, one of the real benefits of having them on your/ones PC is that you can use a photo editor program - I used Microsoft Photo Editor - to enlarge the photos to be able to see more detail.

Either way, though, I'm happy to try to help.

THIS IS A GREAT SITE! The Member Gallery feature is a REAL PLUS!

Okay, I just did it. I uploaded 18 of the car and two of the ChromaLusion paint job I did on my bike.

They're in the Member Gallery.

I hope they're good enough for all to see what you can do if you just "have at it".

Remember, I'd never painted a car or bike before and I drive the car everyday, so it gets a lot of road wear - rocks and whatever.

The paint job on the car is about 3 years old and I did the bike in Oct., 2002.

Enjoy. Jake

Looks great to me! :beer

Nice bike you got there by the way...

Almost forgot the most important thing. THANK YOU FOR THE TIP, 69MyWay!

Nice job... how many coats?
Any clear coats?
[/QUOTE

Both the bike and the Vette were shot with DuPont's Chroma system. The car with ChromaBase, which is base then clean. the bike with ChromaLusion, which calls for a specific black base, then the ChromaLusion paint and then a clear.

Both, then are base/clear systems, it's just that ChromaLusion calls for a specific base paint to bring out the color change. It's not any more expensive than other bases, it's the ChromaLusion paint that goes on top of the base that empties the wallet.

I lost count on coats. I just shot until it was even in color all around. I can try to find the receipt, but I believe I only used two quarts of epoxy primer/sealer, two of the base and two of clear. Of course when you factor in activator, converter, etc, that turns into about a gallon of each.

I believe that they call for a mixing ratio of 1:1, but I'd have to go back and find the paperwork to be sure on that. Whatever it was, though, I just followed DuPont's mixing instructions. I didn't deviate ANY from them.

BTW, I took a pass on any recomendation of "This is just as good as (fill in the blank) and it's cheaper too". What DuPont said, I did, PERIOD. I don't believe in re-inventing the wheel.

Pros can get away with doing things like that, but I wouldn't make a pimple on a pro painter's you can guess what comes next.
