Just wondering if anyone had a side view pic of an 81 Vette with original rally rims on it?
I recently removed our build sheet from the gas tank (St Louis car, no records available from NCM) and found out that the old girl came with standard rally rims and 255/60/15 tyres. I am thinking of ditching the American Racing rims and replacing them with a set of rallys, but don't really know how they will look on an 81. I have seen $hitloads of older Vettes with the rims, but not an 81. All the 81's I have seen either have aftermarket rims or code N90 aluminium rims.

Can anyone help?

Here's a side view of my car, I hope these are the wheels you are looking for.

Thanks Gary, but those wheels are code N90 Aluminium wheels. This code was available on 36485 of the 40606 Vettes sold that year.

I do appreciate your help though.

Thanks

Tony

you can check out my site, I have a good side view of my 80

with rally wheels.

Any chance this might be what you're looking for?

Yep, that's them!

Hey they look pretty damn good!
I have a guy here in Australia who has just brought a container back from the US containing a 68 & 69 and a heap of parts. He has the rallys. the rims are new US made, but the centre caps are original GM units that need a tidy up.
At least I will be able to put some decent rubber on the rims now. The 225's & 245 on the rear just don't look wide enough for the stance of the old girl.

Thanks for the pic, I do appreciate it.

tony, i had 255 all round and found they rubbed on the guards at low speed cornering, 245 on the front helped out there, alas the back still rubs, but they sure look good though.

regards ernie.

Make sure they are the 8" wide rims! A lot of 7" rallys out there but they look too skinny on the Sharks.

Tony, I'm sure Tom Bryant or Rare could tell you for sure, but I don't know if the rims on the '68-69 were the same width as those used in '81. If not, they may not fit a 245 or 255 size tire.
On the stock aluminum (N90) rims, I believe 255 is about the biggest you can put on 'em. That's what I had on mine. I've heard of people also using 255's up front, but that too big for my liking and I think it rubs on corners. 245's don't rub (on my car).

Rally Wheels were 6" in 1967
7" in 1968
8" in 1969-1982

In 1981 standard tires were P225/70R15 black with white letters as a $72.00 option

Option QXH was P255/60R15 white letter tires so they should fit since both Rally and N90 aluminum wheels were the same 8 inches wide with the same backspacing. It seems like I remember that some owners had some rubbing problems when they were new so 25 year old springs could be a slight problem.

Of the 40,606 1981 Corvettes built only 18,004 had the 255/60 tires and even less, 4121 or just barely over 10%, had steel Rallys making them rather rare if originally equiped. There is no way to tell how many of the Rally wheel equiped cars also had the 255 tires from St. Louis.

HERE IS MY 81 , CAME STOCK WITH THE RALLYS , SEND ME YOUR EMAIL AND I HAVE GREAT PHOTO'S OF MY 81 WITH THE RALLYS, I LIKE THE RALLY'S BETTER , THEY HAVE THE 60'S -70'S LOOK!!

Most folks don't realize ralley wheels were stock before and after the Big Wheels came out. If you didn't order the optional wheels, you got rallies. Stock is 15 x 8. On your '81, they will look exactly like they do on other Corvettes.
