I was reading in Lingenfelter's book about plugging the oil bi-pass valve on the oil filter adapter. Just wondering if anyone has done this to their motor. It makes sense to plug the bi-pass to keep unfiltered oil from re-entering the engine. Although, he warns about blowing oil filters apart on cold start ups if the engine is revved up. I am installing a Melling Hi-volume oil pump capable of 70 psi. It seems like I would be asking for trouble with this mod, but I don't like the idea of unfiltered oil passing through my motor.

Is this some kind of scare tactic?:L

I wouldn't do it. In really cold temps oil filters have been known to blow just with the high volume oil pump.I would sooner install some type of oil warmer to have the oil warm on startup to avoid the bypass.

first a note on high volume oil pump--if you do extended high rpm operation with standard capacity oil pan and a high-vol pump, you may notice oil pressure fluctuate wildly, down to 0 occasionally...we did note that...change to standard volume/high pressure pump cured the problem...i don't know what the problem is, but i know the cure.

been billions of miles run by sbc's with operational relief valves, i don't see plugging the relief to be of much benefit...maybe even detrimental since restricted flow without bypass is net less oil for lubrication at bearings...the sbc is not considered to have lube difficulties in stock form...if it ain't broke---

Good point, with high volume pump you can actually pump the pan dry if your drainage in the upper part of the engine isn't good.

Good point! I'm thinking I should exchange my Hi-volume pump for a stock piece.
