Being this is my first Vette, I want to buy some Delco plugs but I'm not sure which ones to get. The regular or the rapid fire? The car is mostly stock except for a T.B. spacer, true duals and a chip. It's also an automatic. Do I need to run a one step up hotter plug due to having an auto?

The Rapid Fire plugs will not be necessary for your application. You will be surprised at how a full tuneup will wake your car up!

I also read on this forum to gap the plugs at .045, but my owners manual says to gap .035, which is better?

85 plugs

Hey Volks...
I would stick with the stock settings as they are apt to be more correct. Good luck with your tune-up and get ready for a hassel when you get to the no. 2 plug...

It was a hassle alright, almost 2 hours to change those damn plugs.

Take a look at this, were your plugs at .035 when you removed them? this might be the reason why.

Some 1985 Camaro, Monte Carlo and Corvettes with high output ignition coils may exhibit driveability problems ranging from hesitations, sags, and stumbles to complete ignition cut-out. These conditions my be caused by extended exposure to high temperatures.
Should any vehicle/engine combination stated above experience the described driveability conditions and normal service procedures (See Service Manual) do not correct the conditions, the following steps are to be taken to prevent future reoccurrence:
  1. Replace the high output coil and distributor module with standard output coil and module as listed below: Model YearVehicle ModelEngine RPOReplacement CoilReplacement Module1985Camaro, Monte CarloL69198547319769081985CamaroLB9198547319769081985CorvetteL9819854741976908
  2. Remove and regap spark plugs to .035 inch.
  3. Check and reset ignition timing to specifications as indicated on the vehicle emissions label.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.

Next time out, you can use the rapid fires gapped at .050. I have my 85 set at that with the rapid fires and I love it. I havent had a single problem. I also went with the Taylor 8mm wires and routed the wires myself and the car runs and looks great

I would go with the NGK Copper. For an LT-1 or LT-4, I'd get the NGK TR55 Double Platinums. That's what I run in mine and I've been very pleased with them.

And I agree, spark plug changes are a major PITA in a C4, thank goodness for the clamshell hood and "onboard work bench" (front tires.) :L
