Shoud i sand it wet? I was going to try a coarse Scotch Brite pad after removing the clear coat. i have had good experience with this on other things.

You can wet sand it to keep the sandpaper from clogging.

Scotchbrite pads are a lot more abrasive than 400 grit, so you start with that and finish it with 400. You have some pretty heavy oxide to remove before you hit base aluminum, but if you get gouges from the scotchbrite pad, they will take a lot of sanding to remove.

If you like punishment . work your way from the 400 to 3000 .

For the final polish, Bom's Away (the best aluminum polish, period!) applied with a drill/bonnet will leave a shine like chrome... I've tried every form of polish over the years, and this is by far the best I've found. Also, it's one of the easiest to use.

To get the mirror finish some guys are talking about, you'd have to rub the machining grooves right off. That would be some job by hand!! A local shop up here will do the mirror finish on them for $75 a wheel, that includes painting the black parts in the spokes.

I hit mine with Mothers once in a while, just by hand, sure puts a nice gloss to them even with the machining marks in.

there is a productfor polished rims called zoop and it seals the aluminum so they stay nicer longer without frequent polishing a big product in the bike world and rods Steve

progress update

i have the same rims as you and they look almost as bad- please update after you have polished them up- i was considering getting new wheels- but i think i will wait to see what kind of success you have-

ps- the dodgers and redskins have something in common- meddling owners- until that changes, unfortunately its going to be a tough road to hoe ; )

Well here in Jersey it was 6 degrees and the Vette is in a Garage tent surrounded by 18" of snow. so it will be a while befor i get to it, But i definitealy will be starting on it in a month. geting ready for spring.
