I can hear the antenna motor run when I turn key on or off but nothing happens. Do I have to replace or repair? How do I get to the thing?

I did one on my '86 a couple of years ago. Not sure if it is the same on an '88 but you can start by taking off the left rear wheel and looking up. You will see almost all you need to do. The antenna cable enters through the rear top of the fender. That is accessible from inside the hatch. You have to move some of the cowling, etc. to get at it. It is a bit of a time consuming job. I do remember I was not in a hurry to do it again! :) But it's not very technical just a lot of wrenching and wriggling things around.

Go for it!..........

If you're lucky it's just a broken antenna mast. It's a good chance if the motor is still working. The ribbed flexible plastic whip "thingy" that gets wound around the motor drive gear often breaks. A new mast is available from GM for around $28 and can be replaced without taking the antenna motor out of the car. (Maybe cheaper elsewhere?) You just remove the lock nut on the top of the antenna housing. It looks like a round ring but has to opposing flat sides and it's threaded. The new mast comes with the tool to do this. You use the antenna motor to drive the old one out and reel the new one in. It should take all of about 10 minutes to fix (including a break) if this is the problem.

Thanks I certainly appreciate the help looks like a winter storage job and that's not far away here in the great northeast.

Did the 91 ZR-1's two weeks ago, mast kit from GM 28.00 smackers, it even comes with destuctions. The only important part was to remember which way the cleats on the cable are facing when the old one comes out. Mine was facing the outboard side. Push the new cable in facing the right way until it bottoms out, turn the key on, turn the radio off and it pulls the new one right down. Not even a one beer job. Good luck 84 CF 91 ZR-1

Thanks for the help I noticed a repair kit in Eklers but wasn't sure worth the extra to get instructions from GM. Thanks again.
