Putting Glass Packs/"Cherry Bombs" on my '78 Corvette

Install a hi flow cat lose the stock one will greatly inprove flow and sound plus you will drop about 20lbs.

If you want a nice sound don't go with the cherrybombs.

I have heard a few cars with them and it really doesn't sound to good. Raspy and such.

Flows or dynomax will tone the exhaust nicely.

In fact you can download soundclips from the dynomax site, or was it borla. I don't remember but a lot of the sites do have sound clips of different cars.

flowmaster 40's; 2 1/2'' pipes...L-48 with original exhaust manifolds...sounds great!!

1974vette: two questions....
#1- does your combination sound like"just every-other 5-point-slow Rustang?"
#2- what is the part number, is it a direct bolt-in, and does that part number fit my '82?

You have your mission; now, GET TO IT!!!

glensgauges,

nah, it doesn't. it has the 'lope' to it...it has a deep roar...and i had the exhaust built for the car...no kit...

Stallion,
One way to make your car sound better is to take off the mufflers, It releases some back pressure and gives your car a nice rumble with out being to loud i can barely hear it when i start up but on the road you can hear it with the radio off but not when the radio is on. it also is free and the muffles are easy to take off

This is illegal.

But how would I get the exaust fumes out the back of the Vette? Where could I get this straight pipe that would fit?

Unless you can weld and/or bend exhaust pipe, you will need to go to a shop or call on a friend with a backyard shop.

So is chambered exhuast, sidepipes, and no cats but it is not illegal till you get caught. BTW in illinois we have had muffler shops take our muffler off and put in a straight pipe stating that all you need in place is a cat. i have also heard that doing anything intentional to you car to make it louder is illegal.

BJ

Stallion, I know a couple auto parts stores around here carry pre-bent pipe.

84Vette, I would really like to do this straight pipe idea. This sounds good. Would most any auto shop have these or have the ability to make these? Because I don't know if I could personally fabricate this sort of thing.

Thanks!

Here's an idea:

Get under the back of your car with a wrench.

Disconnect the pipes from the mufflers (use mechanic's wire to secure them, if they won't stay in place on their own - my exhaust system wasn't stock when I got it, so I don't know if the stock hangers will support the pipes without the mufflers attached)

Start 'er up and listen.

That way you can save some money on shop work, if you decide you don't like it.

I know Eckler's sells replacement "minimalist" mufflers, and other vendors may, also.

(Eckler's part number A4239 - KBD Targa Chrome Tip Mufflers)
(it says it won't be a bolt-on for '78 L38, but I bet that is just due to the exhaust pipe diameter, so an adaper could be used or the pipe could be modified at the end)

Maineshark that was what i was telling stallion to do. I did it and love the sound. Stallion exhaust fumes don't have to come out the back. The side pipes come out in front of the rear wheels and when you take off the mufflers it will be almost at the back of the rear wheels. I have not had a problem with my pipes sagging at all and i don't have anything to hold it up(yes, stock supports will hold it up). the only time i have every gotten fumes is when i was sitting and the wind was blowing them in. I has sat at a stopped talking for 10-20 min never smelled fumes.

Many of the Vette Heads will say that Flowmaster is the best because of the stated horsepower numbers. Those mufflers have a tinny report to them that can be mistaken for loud exhaust. The Dynomax is a bit more muted and deeper. I have the idle set at 600 and at operating temp, it lopes like a Harley. I tell everyone 'I swear, its stock' but they don't believe me.
