I was reading what Eagle was saying about using heat duct insulation to cool and quite things down in his vette. My Flowmaster 40 can be a bit intense so I ran right down to Home Depot and got some. I pulled the carpet out of the rear deck and found where some previous work had removed some insulation around the ASR stuff and not replaced. I filled it in.

Since I had to remove the speaker grill, I decided to check the speaker and pulled it out. I found that the bass reflex area has no insulation. This area is right above the mufflers, and the noise just comes right through the bass porting tube, so I lined it with duct insulation and filled it with fiberglass. That shouldn't hurt the speaker sound any. I also found there is no insulation in the middle section of the two little hatch doors.

Now I've been working on the center console area, but I'm having trouble getting the upper center piece out. I've undone all the screws I can find including the ones by the hatch release button and the screw in the cup holder. The piece that the shifter goes through can be lifed at the rear about two inches, but the front of this piece seems to be screwed into something still, maybe the piece with the radio. I can't find how to undo it, can someone help me out. I have a 94 auto.

Thanks

I have a 85 so mine is different but there are two screws. in mine under the center cover around the radio. I have to take out most of the dash panels to get the console cover off.basicly there is a piece going up under with two screws into the dash

IF your console is put together the same as the '85, there are also four screws that hold the shift lever leather boot in place. These are short screws, two at each end of the shift lever boot. They're a bi-ch to locate and unscrew. You almost need a dental mirror to see them and then a short phillips head screw driver to remove them. UNLESS you remove the gearshift knob. Then you can slide the boot still attached, up the lever and off of the main body of the console when removing the top plate of the console. Aso, when you remove the upper center dash radio bezel or the upright piece that holds the covers the radio, you'll find two screws at the leading edge of the console center piece that will hold it in place if you don't remove them. When you're removing the center console top piece (the one you're inquiring about) be careful not to break the shift indicator needle guides. The assembly links with the gear shift lever to indicate what gear your in. Again, I'm referring to my experience with an '85, so it might not be exactly the same assembly proceedure as your '94.

Thanks both for the response. So you think I have to remove the upper center piece from the dash? Wow, they sure don't make it easy. I appreciate the tips on the shift boot and the gear indicator.

No problem. I pulled the two front screws out of the shift boot by forcing the cover upward. I had a heck of a time putting them back in. You're right. They don't make it easy to disassemble. I think it's because they wanted to hide the screws.

I pulled mine apart this winter.
Not too bad once you know where to look.
I'm not sure how far up you are trying to go but the dash seems to be built from the top down. So if you want to get to the radio or vents you have to pull the console before the face plate, ect.....

The center console has 1 screw under the cup holder and 2 inside the compartment. You need to lift the felt tabs to uncover these screws. They are in the front of the console just behind the seat controls. I think that was all of them?? I had also pulled the cover off but don't think you have to. Should just lift up.

If you want to remove it completely you have to pop the shift button out (it just pulls up) and then there is one of those c clip thingies. You need to have those lock ring plyers to remove it. Now the shift knob will come off and you can pull the whole mess out of your way.

Hope this helps
