Can anyone point me towards some rebuild instructions for the R4 compressor on my 80? I understand that to convert to R134, the compressor needs to be rebuilt with new seals. (Appreciate there may be more to it than this, but hopefully someone could tell me if that is the case)
My a/c packed up about a year ago, so it seems like a handy time to try and start resurrecting it.
Now I realise you can buy a ready built R4 compressor that runs R134, but I'm more keen to do this myself, specially since the tools and seals seem to be readily available.

Any ideas??
Cheers!

I started using a refrigerant that does not require the seals or oil to be changed "ES12a" http://www.btt.org/FAQ.html . Read over the web site data, no vacuum pump or oil change needed and it's equivalency weight is roughly 1/3, 1 can for 3 cans, one can is all my SAAB would hold and it was empty. It's environmentally safe and better than the original R12 and way better than R134. I converted over my SAAB and keep in mind that SAABs are not known for good AC, it will run you out of the car on maximum. As soon as my vette is back on the road I will change it over too, the 134 has never worked worth a darn. :cool

Thanks, that'll definitely be worth looking into! Will have to see if there are suppliers in the UK. Sure there must be...

I'm still keen to find rebuild info on the R4, have you any ideas as far as that goes??

Theo, I believe that the Chevy shop manual has some R4 Rebuild info in it. I will check when I get home and let you know. If it does I might be able to scan it and email it to you. PC

Theo, I was going to send you to www.ackits.com but I see you already have a post there. They really helped me out when I convered my 1976 to R134.

Yeah, just happened past that very useful site a couple of days back.
As far as the shop manual goes, there's precious little stuff in my 80 GM manual, but perhaps yours might be more informative, I'd really appreciate it if you could have a look, cheers!
