I live in a state where detectors are legal and was wondering if anyone had any experience with them. (not that I would ever need one)There seems to be a variety of brands to chose from. Are the $450 units really better than the $200 units. Battery operated verses plug in?

Valentine 1 hands down the best

this subject baffles me.. all these people with smokin fast cars and hardly anyone has an opinion about radar detectors

I imagine most people think this subject has been beaten to death several times already...to kind of sum up the past threads...

Valentine users love Valentines

Escort users love Escorts

A cheaper alternative would be one from Beltronics which if I remember correctly is actually made by Escort.

You pretty well summed it up, I do like my Escort with the blue display. With the proliferation of laser speed guns out here, I don't even bother with mine any more (unless I'm traveling out of town). By the time you get the warning, its too late. The boys are getting pretty good at only targeting certain vehicles so it is hard to get a warning chirp. The best part though, they seem to be targeting the Ricers with fart cans and don't seem to bother with the Vettes any more.

From what I have heard, the Valentines are the best, but they are hard wired into the car, so I have been told. I haven't seen a battery operated Valentine yet. I run the Solo battery powered Radar Detector as I switch it between my vettes and other cars. If you purchase a Radar Detector, remember it won't keep you from getting a ticket if you are the one targeted, but if the police are targeting everyone, then you will pick up the signal. Keep and eye on the brake lights on car in front of you (if there is one). Best is to choose the area where you believe it is safe to open it up. I get nervous when I am driving in areas where I don't know where and if there are speed traps, so unknown areas do diminish the joy of full throttle. I am not quite like Scott, I still turn mine on because I really dislike radar traps; hit too many in my youth in the 60s. The older I get, the more I tend to stay within the speed limits. But when I get on a cruise with other vettes, and my wife is not in the car (would never forgive myself if something happened to her due to my speeding), I have been known to open it up a bit. Good luck with your decision on a purchase.

I just don't speed in town anymore. Too many police trying to boost the Springs operating capital. Now the interstate, that's a different matter. Yes, I do run mine when I'm away from town. I don't like suprises either!!

I love my Blue Escort 9500. Works extremly well and I can take it from car to car.Buying one for my brothers birthday gift.I don't leave home with out it !!

I like my Beltronics I must be the oddball around here or I'm just a cheapskate. ;LOL;LOL When I bought mine I looked at all the top brands but could not justify the additional cost against the beltronics. There are several sites that rate them then search for the best deal.

I've been using the Valentine 1 for several years and love it. I did not hard wire it as I take it from one car to another, plugging it into the lighter.

I thought of doing the same thing of plugging into the accessory/lighter socket when I was looking for a detector, but I really don't like the cord hanging down in the cockpit, so I went to a battery operated detector. Would probably invest in a valentine if it was battery powered. Was wondering if anyone with a valentine has been stopped for speeding? Have not heard of anyone saying yes. Same question with a Solo.

I have an Escort 8500. On my drive from Boise to Idaho Falls, it alerted me three times. Two of those times, the patrol cars were driving in the opposite direction and the alert was in plenty of time. I was not speeding anyway.

The first alert happened after I crested a hill and a state patrolman was tucked down into his favorite hiding spot waiting for speeders. He had me before I could even respond. I had a nice conversation with the patrolman about why I was driving 83. He was going to write me a ticket until some guy drove by us too close. He said that it was my lucky day, and he chased down the other guy.

I have not decided whether I think the detector is worthwhile or not. It certainly didn't alert me to the policeman in the hidey-hole, and I am tempted to drive faster with the detector.

for me it is just a wake up call if i am day dreaming and over the limit a little Steve

I have had 3 escort detectors...thinking about trying the Valentine..will my invisorcord with the phone plug fit the valentine1?
Yes it will. I use my invisicord with my V1 and one of these days I will plug it into my Escort too. I don't know which is best, but I use my V1 much more frequently than my Escort 8500.

Leave the crack pipe alone!

People with radar detectors get speeding tickets
:w
I use a passport 8500 X50. My wife uses a Valentine 1. I have not had a ticket in 15 years. She has had one in the last 20 years! She left her radar detector at home, that day, after I had detailed her car. We both drive "aggressively." Folks who think radar detector users get tickets should leave their crack pipes alone. :chuckle It effects their perceptions of reality! :rotfl
