Rear Differential inspection

Hi guys,

New to this forum. Looks great.

First project on my newly aquired 70 Roadster is a rear suspension rebuild. (Noisy spindle bearing has earned #1 spot on priority list) Plan to replace the differential cover as one of the mounting tabs for the leaf spring is missing. While I have the cover off, is there anything I should be inspecting in the differential aside from obvious ring & pinion damage? Really have no experience with posi rears, but don't want to pass up the opportunity to inspect while I have it apart that far. Or should I carry the unit to a specialist to check out?

Thanks for any guidance.

Andy

Look real careful at the ends of the yoke shafts where they contact the cross pin. there should be a fair amount of steel left between the lock ring grooves and the ends. You might want to replace the clutch pack while it's apart as well. Hope this helps

When you replace the cover and re-install the spring, be sure and have the spring under full load (flat) before you torque the retaining bolts; 90% of all broken ears are a result of torquing those bolts with the car jacked up with the spring relaxed (arched).
