Hello everyone, New to this forum and new owner of a corvette. I have been reading alot of your post and got some really helpfull tips. I have a 1980 corvette that I just got. First corvette for me. First question. I am getting a banging noise from the rear end. It only seems to do it when the car gets warm...(after about 20 minutes or so) and it does it on slow turns..It has done it going straight really slow at times. I jecked the u-joints and they seemed fine buit, I changed them anyway. Half shafts and drive shaft. I put on new shocks while I was there. Still doing it. I checked the wheel bearings and they seemed fine also which led me to the differential. I have read your post about the additive and gear lube and I am changing out the fluid now and putting in the additive from the dealer. The oil was black and smelled burnt. I hope I am not too late. My question is...would this make the car do this type of banging and popping? I can actually feel the car move in the back end.

#2... I have a spare bezel for my vette and I want to install a newer stereo system. I had one guy tell me I need a dash kit which he doesnt know where to get....and another guy told me that I dont need a kit...just cut out the dash... I know I need to cut the dash bezel out but Do I need a kit for the new Stereo?
Thanks for all your help with these problems.. I am very good mechanically, I just lack the knowlege that all of you have..
Thanks again!
Doug

Hey Doug,
fistrly Welcome to the CAC! (Might wanna pop over to the New Member Intros to get a proper Hello from all).. :)

Dont know about #1 (Am no mechanic!).

#2: Never heard of a "dash kit", but yes, if you need to fit a newer radio/cd in there, some cutting of the bezel might be needed, or you can buy a prefit one with the proper fitting bezel. Store your original one on the side, in case you want to sell the car ever in the future.

Thanks Stefan,
Well, I changed the rear end oil and put in 4 oz of the anti slip additive and it seems better but it is still doing it on turns...anyone have any ideas?

try BG additive ls1 or ls2 have had great results with it on stubborn chatter problems Steve

New bezel and rear end lube.

Hi magicharley, you can get a bezel to fit any modern radio from any of the parts supply houses.
Try BGLS1 from any auto parts store, you might luck out. Also try the slow figure 8's. If that fails it's time for a rear end rebuild. PG.

Thanks everyone, I will try the additive and the figure 8s.

Diff's usually chatter not bang, unless there is something broke and an additive won't cure that. Check the rebound rubber bumbers on the frame where the trailing arm would make contact with the frame, I have seen them gone and the susp. would bottom out hard. Good luck.......

if the clutches are sticking enough they can give you quite a bang sensation bg products are a little hard to locate some dealers use thier products and some parts stores carry it also check thier web site they may have suggested retailers I have had good results with thier products ask for the rear end additive Steve

I only encountered a chatter when I used the incorrect lube, but anything is possible, I bought a 71 LT1 Coupe way back when and the rear chattered terribly, probably why the lad sold it, it didn't do it until after I bought it, I changed the lube with the GM type, problem went away. I had a Detroit Locker in a vehicle and that would bang on occasion as it was indexing, it was a lot fun though............Rock On

Doug,

Could that guy be referring to a radio harness kit, perhaps? Also, before you chop that bezel to oblivion, please consider what are you wishing for as far as the sound quality of your stereo. The reason I ask, is that there is not need anymore to install stereos that play CD's. Nowadays, you can play an iPod on your car, and the sound is much better that CD's -plus no skipping of the tracks when driving on rough roads.

Thanks to all of you! As far as the rear end...I am going to try and find the bg additive and try that.. It was banging all the time almost like a tooth was in the gears, it was loud...but since I put in new lube and one 4oz bottle of additive from the dealer....it only does it every so often now where as before it was all the time.

On the stereo...I have a new bezel for my vette..I dont want to chop the original one...What I am asking I guess is...The new stereos need to slide into a case or a holder..This is the kit I am refering to So what will hold the stereo up? If I just cut out the new bezel..it is only suported by the front. Maybe I dont know how to word it correctly... On my 2007 chevy truck...I put in an after market stereo..and I had to buy a kit for the stereo to fit into... Will I need one for this vette? I have been given different answers...

UPDATE.... I just spoke to someone on the phone that is knowlegable on the corvette and stereos and he said there is no install kit.... He said they just cut out the bezels...

By chopping it is meant that you are trying to install a stereo with a controls face that does not fit the area allowed by the bezel.

But, there are stereos out there that will fit fine and provide the features you are looking for and more. Check Custom Auto Sound, for example, for these kind of stereos.

I still say that an iPod is the way to go...;shrug:upthumbs

Thanks Gerry, But I already have the stereo I want to put in my car and no, it doesnt have knobs like the traditional style. Thats why I got the spare bezel so I dont have to cut my original. I see what you mean though...

Mine has just a strip of metal, with loads of holes, that is screwed to the bottom in the rear and attaches to the back of the radio. Nothing else, other then the knobs hold mine in it's place.

Let me know if a picture would help..
