Learned alot -
First that the Shop Manuals aren't as easy to read as Chiltons.

Pulled the rear hatch weather strip off. Fairly easy. Occasional yellow greasy stuff. Little bit of Black adhesive.

But, the attaching strip had released the fluff part of the weather strip.
SO once I removed the attaching strip, there was the source of the yellow goo.
Took a while to clean all of that off.

Removing all three pieces of trim -
Rear trim was a piece of cake.
Side pieces are attached beneath the B pillar trim(that is the same piece as the over head trim).

Once we took off the seat belts, the B pillar trim came down and provided enough room to install the weather strip without completely removing the side trim from the rear hatch area.

Unscrewed the hydraulic pistons that hold the rear glass. installed the weather strip. re-attached the pistons to the glass.
then started the labor!

Making sure all of the screw clips were lined up and that we had the proper screws to re install the trim.

Then re install the rear hatch area trim and then wipe down the fingerprints from the car as best ya can at 1 am.

Time: 4 hours
Due to inexperience, tons of yellow goo to clean out, and guessing on removal of B pillar / roof trim.

ok, lucky for me I had the right tool to remove the seat belt.
Pried the courtesy light panel, but alas no visible screw yet.
So Im still stuck -

Anyone done this before?" Am I off course or just blinded?

Thanks
Rain

Pics have been uploaded to the Members Gallery. Will link up here once they are approved.

Might go back tomorrow and take pics of each Trim Panel and show the number of screws that must be removed as well as that tricky one under the B pillar trim panel. (between the light and the back edge where the side trim meets)

I'm sorry, I know this is really off-topic, but how much was that weatherstripping and where did you buy it from? I'm looking for an alternative to the stealership...

Ah, had not given that any thought.
Thanks for the heads up!

Looks nice. I bet it is hard to close that hatch now! I remember when I replaced mine on my 85, I thought I was going to break the glass to get it closed. It gets compressed after awhile and becomes easier. Guy

I don't mean to hijack your thread here but I have one question that has been bugging me while sound proofing my car. I have a huge glob of that yellow greasy stuff underneath the back corners of the hatch closest to where the seats are. Does anybody know what that grease is for before I start to remove it?

Thanks for any help,
Shane

Yellow like some of what I found?
I had that yellow stuff under nearly 80% of the weatherstrip mount tab.
Had also leaked a bit down into the soundproofing of the rear hatch. Not a huge mess, but a pain when removing it.

Not sure what the purpose of that yellow stuff is/was.

I believe that the yellow "stuff" is a lubricant used to facilitate installation of the hatch weatherstrip.

Tight fit doesnt begin to describe this rear window! haha
Just gotta push on it. Figured the rubber would yeild better on down the road.
Glad to hear it does!

The final skinny strip that fits over the edge of the Bpillar trim was short about a half inch on each side when I pulled it. Sure enough, its short by that much when re installed.
Little high pressure water hose does show that water can be forced in. But I dont forsee any air or rain leaks..

In the '93, the halo trim must be loosened: the weatherstrip goes between the trim pieces and the body and is held in place by the halo trim pieces. The '90 may be different.

SO the part I continue to call the B Pillar trim, is the Halo?

Yes, the B-piller trim runs up one side, over the top and down the other side.

Yellow Goo

What you'd use to remove that yellow lubricant so as not to affect the paint finish?
