Rear speaker solution

I found one inch speakers in the JCWhitney caalog i.m in the process on puting them in (they claim to be 100 watt)????
I had the original radio wired for CD changer works off one of the low FM station. will see..
work in progress

6x9 encloseure

I have found a solution for the sloppy rear sound of the rear speakers. Of course, this is BLASPHEMY because its not the stock, GM-blessed-by-the-hand-Zora "look" ..... but it serves its purpose well.

Remove the factory speaker and assembly (if the previous owner hasn't done so already). Now, purchase a 6x9 speaker enclosure and remove the the bottom corner as picured in the attachment- it wil fit perfectly over the factory speaker location and only protrude four inches out. You want to have the wires enter through the side that butts up to the carpet so as to conceal the wires. You can drill through the enslosure and use the original speaker mounts (threaded self-retaining clips). The sound quality is phenominal compared to the original. Additionally, it will give you the clarity provided by the enclosure without mounting any clunky floor mounted boxes.
Hi, could you send or post the pics again. My 1980 did not come with rear 6x9's, just the front dash speakers. I now want to install 6x9's in the rear and maybe some 5.25's in the kick panels along with a new receiver, amp. and subwoofer. The only thing I have any idea on what I'm doing is the 6x9's. The rest I'm trying to figure out how and where to put it all.
Thanks, ;shrug

You could probably use those, but you'd have to wire it so the impedance is correct. You'd still have to fab a mounting plate though.

Sub placement is difficult if you plan on keeping room for the tops. I suppose you could hang a dual 8" or 6" box off the rear deck, and the t-tops would slide underneath...hmmm.... :confused

I've actually got a 12" sub mounted under the rear deck facing down. I also have two 8", one on each side over the rear wheel well up against the rear wall, two 4" x 6" two ways in the dash and two 4" x 6" two ways in the kick panels. I have 1200 watts of amps in the jack compartment. It will blow you away and still have room for the tops and two small duffel (sp?) bags.

Have you had any problem with the amps over heating?

How did you install the sub in the back. Sounds awesome. :w

The amps are Alpine and the selling point is that they are "Digital" so they don't create heat. I'm not an electronics guru so I don't know about all that. I just know after listening to the radio for 6 hours on the way to Hot Springs Arkansas in the summer, they were barely warm. The only downside is the cost. They are between $600.00 and $700.00 each. I've got a bolt through the rear wall and into the back of the sub box and then I used a longer center screw for the rear window bottom trim and went into a brkt. I made on the front of the box. If you E-mail me at AJett @ smith.com I'll reply with some pics. I can't seem to post any here. They just come up as a red X. Art

Thank You, they look great. Did you make the 6x9 speaker box or bought them already made? If you bought them do you remember where.
Thanks again. :w

You can get them from Crutchfield. They are 6x9 boxes- fairly common too.

I pulled the carpet off of them. You can recarpet them. I chose to texture spray them and then paint them with interior dye.

Gee, an 8 year old thread on speakers with no pictures.

;squint:

To your point DeeVeeEight, after eight years... it's reasonable that links become broken.

That can be fixed... seeing as I started the thread! I didn't realize the images didn't make it. No matter. :thumb

Every time I try to post a pic it just comes up as a red "X" in a box. Not much point in posting pics if that's all that comes over!

Last winter I overhauled my interior and found this very thread. Thanks Kane I followed your leed and built my own from scratch

That looks GREAT! Did you do anything with a sub woofer and amp?
I'm attemping to upgrade my 80. I was going to keep the original radio in the dash and put the new one in the glove box, but now I'm thinking I'll just go ahead and put it in the dash. Still haven't made up my mind on the location of the amp and sub. :w

Thanks guys. No sub woofer or amps for me. The speakers are 6x9 alpine and the single disk deck I installed is just a moderate 50 watt pioneer. The headers and magna flows are the real music.

Great looking job. Is your boxs fully enlosed in the back, or did you just mount them against the back carpet??
Also, how did you mount them??
Looks really great, I'm fixin to do the same, and I like the look you went with. Any pointers you could give me on the boxes would be aprreciated.
Thanks,

Thanks,

The boxes are closed in the back and I used self drilling screws to attach. The screws go through the original speaker brackets that are behind the carpet. I made a template out of cardboard to form around the wheel well and used 5/8" partical board. The material for the boxes is called fose. Not sure about the spelling but got it at the upholstery shop. Google speaker box cover and watch a video on how they cut the material and glue with no seams. It was pretty easy once you know there tricks.

here is the vidieo on how to cover a speaker box http://www.wonderhowto.com/how-to-carpet-basic-subwoofer-box-vehicles-system-266524/view/

Speaker box for 68 convertible

Has anyone come up with a way to add speakers and a sub in a 68 convertible? I want to be able to use the convertible top. I would love to see some pics if anyone has done this.
