I have a 94 that I have noticed has 2 areas about 1/8" by 1/4" to 1" long where the spring appears to have splintered. They are not deep by any means. What is acceptable and at what point should replacement be considered?

This is not good. Any splintering of the spring means it time to replace it. If not, it will be dragging the ground one day.

I concur. It doesn't take long either for them to "go". Weather changes can be sufficient combined with the right bump to spell disaster.... I've parked my 84 for this reason alone until I can not only replace this but rebuild my entire front suspension!!
