Hey there! L88 Crazy here!!

My 72 Vette's rear storage compartment doors are driving my INSANE!!!! They are virtually disintergrating right before my eyes!! I replaced a couple years ago and hardly used them. Now the replacements are falling apart too!!! HELP ME!!! What is the deal with these compartment doors. Everytime I open them the doors rip at the hinges!! The ones I replaced the originals with were suppossedly better the OE!! Any advice is needed BADLY!! HOW DO I STOP THIS!!!!!

Hello, yes it is absolutely crazy. My trim pieces started to come off mine, so I just completely avoid using them. When I do have to open and shut them I use "kid gloves". I don't know of a real answer either. But definitely a weak point.

If you're handy with woodworking tools, obtain some cabinet grade 7-ply birch plywood the correct thickness and cut out new doors to match the old. Material should be available at most any home improvement store or lumber yard. Drill pilot holes in the edges of the doors to align with the hinges. Seal all of the plywood edges with a good marine varnish to prevent water and moisture penetration. Should last you a long time.

I have the original doors, frames, etc. on my 69 and they're just fine. The car has 100K miles on it. What's the problem? What is disintegrating? :) Chuck
