For some reason the alternator for the 85 vette is not available rebuilt. The new one is $300 Is there rebuild kit, diodes brushes, etc. ?

The 17SI alternator used in 84 and 85 is a POS, anyway. Unless you want your car to be all original, the best thing to do for those model years is convert to the 92-up CS144. It's more powerful, more reliable and probably cheaper. The procedure is discussed in an article at: http://www.idavette.net/hib/reman.html

alternators

I can provide any parts needed for the alternator rebuild. All I need to know is the type and amperage. A kit gives unnecessary extra parts. Generally the diodes are the most troublesome followed by the regulator.

Totally awesome article, it has everything I was wondering about!!!!!:beer

Thanks irfgt and Hib :w

Alternators

Yes what a great article!!! I printed it off and it's in a folder .....

And .... I agree there is no IF word when refering to an alternator ... it's more likely .... WHEN.
